Anti-Doping

As the independent national anti-doping organization in the United States, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) manages anti-doping responsibility for Olympic and Paralympic sports in the United States and works closely with national governing bodies including USA Cycling to protect clean competition and athletes. Both USADA and the International Cycling Union (UCI) are signatories of the World Anti-Doping Code, a guideline for the strictest standards among anti-doping programs in sport. Aside from international testing, more than 800 tests are performed each year on USA Cycling members, both professional and amateur, by USADA.

Cycling is among the most assertive professional sports in terms of punishment for doping offenses, fosters one of the most aggressive anti-doping testing programs in sports, and follows the most strict enforcement guidelines established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) — a rider who cheats can be suspended for up to four years for a first violation and a second serious violation of anti-doping rules can lead to lifetime suspension. Despite nearly doubling the number of annual tests for cycling in the U.S., the amount of sanctions have remained steady or fallen over the last five years.

By using a USA Cycling license, you agree to know and abide by the applicable rules and regulations of USA Cycling and the UCI, including the anti-doping rules and procedures as set forth by USADA, the UCI or WADA and that you agree to submit to any drug test organized under the rules by the UCI, USA Cycling, USADA, or the official anti-doping authority of a foreign country where you are competing.

Athletes subject to out-of-competition (OOC) testing are reminded to update Athlete Location Forms!

USA Cycling's RaceClean Program

USA Cycling created the RaceClean program as part of its ongoing commitment to clean sport, ensuring a level playing field, and promoting athletes’ health and well-being. This will be accomplished through a dual approach of increased education, using the resources developed by the USADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the UCI, and increasing the frequency and effectiveness of in-competition and out-of-competition drug testing at all levels of competitive cycling in the United States that is governed by USA Cycling. Visit our RaceClean Program page to learn more.

Helmet Policy

At all times when participating in or preparing for an event held under a USA Cycling permit, including club rides, motorcycle drivers and all motorcycle passengers shall wear a securely fastened helmet that meets the US DOT motorcycle helmet standard. Read the full policy.

Medicine of Cycling

Medicine of Cycling is an independent group of physicians working to improve processes that can have a meaningful impact on the way care is delivered to cycling athletes. In addition to holding an annual conference, they have created a research library with the goal of making it easier for healthcare professionals and the cycling public to have a greater and more simplified access to medical literature on a wide range of topics. Visit the Medicine of Cycling website for more information.

Concussions

Standards of Care — The Medicine of Cycling Concussion Task Force recommends that any rider with a witnessed loss of consciousness during training or competition should be immediately removed from competition for medical evaluation. This recommendation does not imply that a rider who sustains a head injury without witnessed loss of consciousness is fit to ride. This Concussion Task Force is actively working towards the establishment of a standard approach to injured cyclists without a loss of consciousness and has established guidelines for team managers and coaches.

Bernard Condevaux, PT gave a presentation on concussions at the USA Cycling Coaching Summit in October 2010. He was kind enough to repeat the presentation as a webinar. A recording of the webinar is available on this page.
