Power Based Training Courses

GENERAL INFORMATION
The USA Cycling Power certification 3-day course will incorporate “on the bike” training using Power meters as well as enhanced education with building training plans based on the power training principles.   It is highly recommended to bring your bicycle (if you don’t have a power meter, let us know and we’ll source one for you to use for the weekend), to take full advantage of this clinic.  Along with riding on Day 1 and Day 2,  you will learn all the fundamentals of Power training from Power training zones to the latest in Power meters themselves to how to develop a training plan using a power meter.  Your instructors will be Hunter Allen, USAC Level 1 coach, co-author of “Training and Racing with a Power meter”, and co-developer of TrainingPeaks WKO+ software. Hunter has taught the power training principles to over 4000 people in 12 different countries and is considered one of the world’s leading experts in power training.   Teaching with Hunter will be, Dr. Stephen McGregor, chair of the Exercise Physiology dept at Eastern Michigan University,  USAC Level 1 coach, co-author of “The Runners Edge”,  and teacher of over 30 USAC certification courses over the past 10 years. This is the 10th year of Power Training classes and certifications run by USA Cycling and this will be the first which will include “on the bike” training.   Take part in this exciting new aspect of Power Training ensuring you leave full of knowledge for the use and coaching with a power meter.

Beginning in 2013, coaches will be abe to count either the power based based training course or the exam for CEUs but not both.  The course is worth 20 CEUs; the certification exam is worth 10 CEUs.

Only Level 2 and Level 1 coaches are eligible to take the exam and gain the Power Based Training certification.  One does not need to attend the power based training clinic in order to take the certification exam.  For those who attend a USA Cycling power based training clinic, there is no additional cost for the exam; for those who do not attend a USA Cycling clinic, the cost of the exam is $199.  Level 3 coaches may attend the power based training clinic, but they cannot take the exam until they have passed the level 2 exam.

For level 2 and 1 coaches, the certification exam can be downloaded by logging into your account and clicking on "account" (under the Welcome header).  On the account page you will find and click on "Coaching Links (including tests)"  which is where you will find the link to download the test.at no charge.  Your coaching license must be current in order to access the exam.  If you have not attended a Power Based Training clinic, payment for the test is due when you submit your test answers.

A passing score is  80%.  If you fail on the first attempt, you will be given one chance to correct the errors.  If you do not pass the test on the second trial, you must wait one calendar year to re-take the exam.  The entire exam must be re-submitted.  If you re-test, you must pay a $199 fee.  The fee applies even if you have attended a power based training clinic.
