Pro CX: Wyman & Powers head into Thanksgiving with standings leads
Due to the postponement of the two Supercross Cup races, the riders of the USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX) had two multi-day events to contest over the past two weeks. Two weeks ago, the elite men and women along with the juniors men competed in the USGP of Cyclocross-Derby City Cup in Louisville on Nov. 10-11. The following week, the elite men and women competed in three days of Jingle Cross Rock in Iowa City, Iowa, from Nov. 16-18.
Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-FOCUS) remains the leader of the Pro CX men's standings after sweeping the two races in Louisville. Powers has racked up 750 points and holds a 106-point cushion on the second-place rider Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale-Clement). Trebon finished second and fourth in Louisville. He also placed second and fourth in the first two Jingle Cross Rock races, bringing his season-long point total to 644. Ben Berden (BEL/Raleigh-Clement) finished third in each of the three races in Iowa after placing second and fifth in Louisville. Berden's 588 points is only 56 points behind Trebon, but is only 12 points ahead of a hard-charging James Driscoll (Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com). Driscoll won the first Jingle Cross Rock race before placing second and fifth in the next two to boost his total to 576. Timothy Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) won the second and third races in Iowa to climb into fifth place with 437 points.
After sweeping the top spot at the three Jingle Cross Rock races, Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona Factory Team) maintains her grip on the top spot of the Pro CX women's standings with 770 points. Wyman collected 230 points over the past two weeks. Wyman also placed fourth in each of the two contests in Louisville. Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective), who held the top spot last week after sweeping the two races in Louisville, dropped to second place with 600 points. Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing) remains in third place, 160 points behind Compton. Gabriella Day (GBR/Team Rapha-FOCUS) sits in fourth place with 392 points while Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./LUNA Pro Team) broke into the top five with 348 points. Gould finished third in each of the races in Derby City Cup races to pass Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) in the standings.
Winning the two races in Louisville was not enough for Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Redline) to move into the top spot of the Pro CX juniors men's standings. Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team), who finished second to Owen in each of the two races in clinging to the top spot with 200 points. Owen is in second place with 120 while Nathaniel Morse (Cohasset, Mass./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) dropped one spot into third place with 95 points. Spencer Downing (Boulder, Colo./Horizon Organic-Panache Elite Cycling) and Stephen Bassett (Knoxville, Tenn./Bob's Red Mill CX) are only two points behind Morse with 93 points apiece. Downing holds a slight edge on Bassett due to a better single-race finish in Cincinnati on Nov. 4.
The juniors men will next battle for standings points at the CXLA Weekend-Cross After Dark in Los Angeles on Dec. 1-2.
