Meet the Athlete

Emma first started riding mountain bikes through the Sweetlines program out of Issaquah, WA. She soon fell in love with the sport and started racing downhill in 2018. From there, she competed in several local NW Cup Series races and soon progressed to race the Jr. expert class. In 2021, Emma placed second at the USA Cycling DH National Championships in Winter Park, CO. This facilitated her joining Team USA to represent and compete at the UCI MTB DH World Championships in Va di Sole, Italy. Emma concluded the 2021 race season racing the UCI MTB World Cup DH double header in Snowshoe, WV. Emma’s primary focus for the 2022 race season is centered around the USA Cycling DH National Series as well as the UCI MTB World Cup DH series. She will be attending Fort Lewis College in the Fall, where she will conclude the race season competing in collegiate races and racing for the Skyhawks.

What is one of the most pivotal experiences you've had that helped get you to where you are today?

One of my most pivotal experiences is actually a combination of events and realizations. It was when I figured out that progression isn't always about podiums and medals, but knowing that you learned something and did something new, essentially pushing myself. I think this mindset was what helped me progress so quickly and push me to become who I am today as a rider.

Growing up, how did youth sports impact who you are today?
Growing up I had participated in soccer for 7 years. Basically, my entire childhood. It taught me about teamwork and that I enjoyed the outdoors. It was a good time but my life changed when my little sister signed up for a youth cycling class through an organization named Sweetlines. I went with her and began riding the mountain bike trails at the Bike Park while she had her lessons. That’s when I was introduced to “real mountain biking”. At that point I knew I found the sport that I loved and have become so attached to. I don’t think if I had been in youth sports and been active, I would have found mountain biking.

What is something you would tell your younger self if you could go back in time?

I would tell myself “Dream as big as you want to. You are putting in the hard work and all the effort, so what is limiting you? Reach for the stars and don't let anyone hold you back”.
