Pro CX: Margins narrowing atop standings
With only eight races remaining on the 2013 USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX), points are at a premium. Since Thanksgiving, the riders of the Pro CX have contested six races from coast to coast. The action began on Nov. 24-25 in Sterling, Mass., where the Baystate Cyclo-cross took centerstage. After that, the NEPCX NBX Gran Prix of Cross in Warwick, R.I. and CXLA Weekend-Cross After Dark in Los Angeles spanned the Dec. 1-2 weekend.
Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Cannondale-Clement) placed second in each of the two races in Los Angeles, collecting 80 points. He now trails the standings leader Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-Focus) in the Pro CX men's standings by 86 points. James Driscoll (Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) won the first race in Los Angeles and moved into third place with 652 points. Ben Berden (BEL/Raleigh-Clement), who placed third in the two CXLA Weekend-Cross After Dark contests, collected 60 points over the weekend, but has dropped into fourth place with 648 points. The winner of Sunday's race in Los Angeles, Timothy Johnson (Topsfield, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com), rounds out the top five with 547 points.
Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing) strung together four top-five finishes, including winning the first Baystate Cyclo-cross race, over the past two weeks to move within 20 points of second place in the Pro CX women's standings. Helen Wyman (GBR/Kona Factory Team) remains the standings leader with 770 points, while Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective) is only 170 points back in second place. Anthony is on Compton's heels with 580. Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) has overtaken Gabriella Day (GBR/Team Rapha-Focus) for fourth place. Kemmerer, who placed second and third at the two races in Warwick, now has 446 points, 54 points ahead of Day.
There were a pair of races for the juniors men in Los Angeles leaving only four on their calendar. Tyler Schwartz (Newport Beach, Calif./Surf City Cyclery-Sterling BMW) and Spencer Downing (Boulder, Colo./Horizon Organic-Panache Elite Cycling) each recorded a win and a second-place finish in Los Angeles. Despite each of those two riders collecting 100 points in two races, Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) remains in first place of the Pro CX juniors men's standings with 200 points. Downing jumps into second place with 193 points while Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Redline) drops into third place with 120 points. Schwartz jumped all the way from 15th place into fourth place after his strong showing on the west coast. Nathaniel Morse (Cohasset, Mass./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) rounds out the top five with 95 points.
