Meet the Athlete

Born in Germany, Mandy grew up in Plantation, Florida. She was active with swimming, running and playing tennis, and wanted to compete in triathlons. She began competitively cycling at the age of 10 at the Brian Piccolo Velodrome in nearby Cooper City, selecting the track because it was a safe place to learn. Within a short amount of time and coached by Mike Fraysse and Betsy Davis, she went on to win two gold medals in the criterium and time trial at the 2003 U.S. Junior Women’s 10-12 Road National Championships, and a silver medal in the road race. She was hooked on cycling.

What is one of the most pivotal experiences you've had that helped get you to where you are today?

When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2007, it was challenging. I didn’t want to give up riding because the bike was always my happy place, but I felt a little lost for a while. Joining Team Novo Nordisk in 2010 and being amongst a team of athletes who were living and racing with diabetes changed my perspective and gave me hope! Today, it's a fulfilling feeling to race my bike worldwide with a purpose and help others see what is possible with diabetes.

What is your favorite post-ride snack/meal?

A nice cold protein shake or smoothie and if I'm hungry for something more, a chicken and veggie wrap are my go-to!

What is your favorite quote or piece of advice to live by?

"If you shoot for the moon and you miss, you will land amongst the stars" – When I was younger, my parents framed that quote and it hung beside my bed. It resonates with me still today because, as long as you go for it and give it your best, the outcome will always be better than where you started.

I've had a lot of great memories with my teammates and on the podium, but always stoked to travel and compete somewhere new and represent the red, white and blue!
