JOHN STENNER

Collegiate Cycling Scholarship Fund

The John Stenner Memorial Collegiate Scholarship is awarded annually to the top male and female riders in USA Cycling’s Collegiate Cycling programs. Scholarships are awarded to full-time students who have gone the extra mile to succeed in the areas of academics and community involvement with an emphasis on collegiate team development, and competitive cycling results. Awards are presented live each year at the USA Cycling Collegiate National Road Championships.

Background

1992 Olympian and former U.S. National Team member John Stenner, one of the founding fathers of Collegiate Cycling, spent his lifetime as a bicycle innovator and strove to elevate the quality of competition of the sport he loved.

Stenner, 29, died when he was struck by a pick-up truck while traveling home from work in May, 1994, near Mead, Colo. Following his death, donations to the family poured in, and the scholarship fund in his name was established, and the original donations have since been converted into an endowment. The John Stenner Collegiate Cycling Scholarship awards continue to be funded by the annual donations to the USA Cycling Foundation.

Stenner sought the best in everything he did on or off the bike. The Stenner Collegiate Cycling Scholarship program recognizes athletes like John who strive for perfection and excellence throughout their lifetimes and in everything they set out to achieve.

JOSHUA KUCK

Collegiate Cycling Scholarship Fund

The Joshua Kuck Memorial Collegiate Scholarship is awarded annually to the top male and female riders in USA Cycling’s Collegiate Cycling programs. Scholarships are awarded to full-time students who have gone the extra mile to succeed in the areas of academics and collegiate team development, with an emphasis on cycling safety, advocacy and education in their respective communities. Awards are presented live each year at the USA Cycling Collegiate National Road Championships.

Background

Joshua Kuck came from his home state of Maine to Florida in 2005 to attend the University of South Florida in Tampa. Josh was passionate in his endeavors to found a collegiate cycling team for South Florida, and he made many friends in the process of organizing and leading the team. Josh was successful at everything he set to mind, and on the bike he proved himself a true domestique, often sacrificing his own race in order for his teammates to succeed. When touting his accomplishments it was always those of the team and not his individual success.

On October 21st, 2007 while riding a century event with his team near Tampa Bay, Josh was hit by a truck and taken from family and friends. His life ended long before he was allowed to achieve all of which he was capable. His family and team honor his memory with this scholarship fund and support the efforts of those working on cycling safety, advocacy and education projects to keep tragedies like this from taking any more of our cycling friends.
