MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions or volunteer hours made by their employees. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please enter your employer's name below.

If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift, we will do the rest. Gift matching could potentially double or even triple the impact on the USA Cycling Foundation! Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

PLANNED GIVING

Making a gift in your will or trust to the USA Cycling Foundation allows you to support the long-term future of American cycling. Not only will your donation help generations of cyclists to come, but including the Foundation in your estate plan may provide an immediate tax deduction, capital gains tax avoidance, or future tax benefits to your heirs.

As with any decision involving your estate plans, we urge you to seek the advice of professional counsel. Please contact the Foundation if you would like to discuss this method of supporting our athletes and teams.

STOCKS & SECURITIES

Giving Securities

While gifts of cash to the Foundation are essential and always gratefully received, the USA Cycling Foundation understands that certain tax benefits can be received through gifting securities. Just as cash gifts to the USA Cycling Foundation are deductible from federal income tax returns for those who itemize, gifts of qualified non-cash properties are also deductible.

The Special Incentives of Non-Cash Securities

Many securities you own may be worth much more than you paid for them in past years. As appreciated securities, these are attractive gifts. In most cases the tax deduction is worth the current fair market value of the securities given. The deductible amount includes both what you paid for the security and the difference between its current value and original value. This may dramatically reduce the cost of making a charitable gift, or help increase the amount you can afford to give. To deduct gifts of appreciated securities at their current value, you must have owned them for at least one year and one day.

What Is Best To Give?

Publicly traded securities are usually the simplest to give due to the ease of transferring them and determining their value for deduction purposes. Closely held stocks may also be given, but special rules apply to them. Other forms of property may be given as gifts, but again, special rules may apply. It is usually better to sell securities that have dropped below their original value and then give the cash proceeds, as you may realize tax benefits from both the capital loss and the charitable gift. Please consult your tax advisor prior to making gifts of this type in order to maximize both your gift and your deduction.

Making the Transaction

After you have chosen the security and the amount you will give, your investment broker can help complete the gift. Please contact the USA Cycling Foundation office for exact giving instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why a Foundation for Cycling?

The elite athlete development process in cycling can span much of the formative life of an athlete and requires significant resources. Most of the countries against which we compete fund elite athlete development through government related funding. Of the major industrialized countries, only the United States does not maintain a socialized sport development system. As a result, American sports governing bodies, such as USA Cycling, must find the resources themselves to create and sustain development programs. USA Cycling is therefore significantly challenged to adequately invest in developing elite athletes which can compete against the best in the world. The USA Cycling Foundation was created with the primary purpose of raising money to support USA Cycling’s elite athlete development programs, including those supporting young athletes (juniors and Under-23) and women. Support the future of American cycling by making a donation today!!

  • What does my donation to the USA Cycling Foundation go towards?
