Coaching Newsletter - December 2022

By: Jon Tarkington  December 20, 2022

Happy Holidays from the USA Cycling Coaching Development and Education Department!

Last month's Summit and Clinics in Colorado Springs were a great learning experience for both participants and the organizers. Look for these lessons to be addressed in 2023 programming. Thanks to all who attended.

As we wrap up 2022, we want to share a few program highlights from 2022. First, without a designated staff person in charge of Coaching Development and Education, USAC was able to develop and secure a revolutionary partnership with Fast Talk Labs. Based on usage information, this was well received by our membership.

Next, USAC was able to fill the Coaching Development and Education Director role in Late April. This role had been vacant since early in the pandemic.

After onboarding and resolving immediate issues from the program dormancy, a combination Clinic and Summit was organized and executed in the fall. Additionally, through a solid six months of working through problems, we can now identify and address some of the tech issues inhibiting our ability to develop this program at scale.

Most importantly, we have to know that you, our coaches, make this program successful. You're the workforce that spends time day in and day out helping to grow our sport. Thanks to you for a great 2022!

Coaching Renewals

It's license renewal season, and there are a few key items to remember:

  1. No CEU reporting required
  2. Licenses renewed prior to 11/15/2022 expire 12/31/2022 (most current license holders)

  3. As of 11/15/2022, coaching licenses no longer expire at the end of the calendar year. Instead, they are a rolling 12-month license. That means they will expire 12 months from when they are renewed.

  4. With a slight price increase taking place in 2023, it's highly recommended you renew your license as soon as possible.

Emails Lists

During the challenging 2020 and 2021 timeframe, staffing and tech issues significantly impacted our ability to connect with you, our very influential coach members. We need your help to reconnect with those we have lost contact with. We encourage you to forward/share this newsletter with any coach you know, especially those who may not have heard from USAC in some time.

You can re-subscribe to the newsletter below.

Looking Ahead to 2023

Looking into 2023, the USAC Coaching Development and Education program has some key areas of focus:

  1. Expand and enhance the partnership with Fast Talk Labs to include the online education portions of our level upgrade process. We will also be working on a pilot professional development series as we see to replace our CEU program.

  2. Work to ensure the tech foundation is in place to scale and advance our program over the coming years.

  3. Create an introductory online "mentor" training with a low entry barrier to expand our reach. Doing so will increase the number of people exposed to our education and development programs.

There are other projects in the works, including some around concussion management, a closer relationship with USA Triathlon, and integrating the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee's Quality Coaching Framework.

We're excited to work with you to grow and develop the future of our sport!

Junior Development Camps

2023 will see the revival and expansion of Junior Development Camps. A number of USA Cycling coaches are currently hard at work organizing camps. If you have a general interest in being involved, please use the following form to be added to a list of potential coach resources. There is a significant need for female coaches with these camps, so please help us spread the word and get more female coaches to help rebuild our development pipeline.
