Following up on its Return to Riding and Racing toolkit for event organizers, USA Cycling will be offering financial assistance by reducing costs for events held during the remainder of 2020. This will provide additional support for those events that are able to safely mitigate risk and operate within local and state health guidelines, helping to alleviate some of the costs brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many events will see an increase in costs to due to additional safety requirements. Items such as purchasing PPE for volunteers and staff, increasing the number of handwash station, providing additional signage and taking steps to protect participants come with increased costs. “We understand many events are looking at higher costs and possible lower participation,” said Chuck Hodge, USA Cycling Chief of Racing and Events, “We want to support those events that are able to safely operate during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
USA Cycling is providing relief and support by waiving all permit fees for the remainder of 2020, and decreasing insurance surcharges across all event types, with many events seeing a 25% reduction in their insurance surcharge costs. Events that have already paid permit fees should contact the USA Cycling Event Services Department for a refund or allocation to a future event.
At the request of several event organizers, USA Cycling has also begun to permit a broad segment of non-traditional events, including virtual and “challenge” type events, providing insurance and protections for the organizer. Any organizers interested in details on this offering may contact USA Cycling at eventservices@usacycling.org
