Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga.; Hagens Berman Axeon) and Brandon McNulty (Phoenix; Rally-UHC) must have been having a case of deja-vu as they sat on the hot seat during today’s U23 Men’s Individual Time Trial at the 2019 UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire, U.K. All three podium finishers were on the podium in 2016 during the Junior Time Trial at the World Championships in Doha where McNulty took home the rainbow jersey while Garrison took bronze. This year Garrison took the silver while McNulty took the bronze behind Danish rider Mikkel Bjerg on a rainy course.
“I think we are all really happy with what we’ve accomplished,” said Garrison, “It’s been a team effort, it’s more than just me out there. There’s so much that happens behind the scenes, with everyone that’s helping get the bike ready and get us to the hotel and all that. I think I’m just really grateful for all that help and for everybody that allows me to get out there and focus and do my ride, so I think we can all be proud of this accomplishment.”
Garrison has been a fixture on the U.S. and International cycling scene since he was a junior. He got into cycling after riding with his parents from a young age. This season, Garrison excelled in the Time Trial, winning both the U23 and Elite National titles. McNulty has also been a star of the sport for U.S. fans having won the Junior Time Trial World title as well as a U23 Silver medal in the 2017 UCI World Championships. McNulty has proved to be an all-around rider and secured his first European win earlier this season at the Giro di Sicilia.
“This was a huge day for Ian and Brandon,” said Scott Schnitzpahn,Vice-President of Elite Athletics, “We’ve watched both of these riders come up through our development system and continue to improve. It’s great to see everything come together like it did today and their hard work paying off in such a big way. We are looking forward to continuing to watch these two riders come into their own as they inspire the next generation of cyclists.”
