Last week our first National Championships of the summer season would have crowned a new class of Collegiate and Para Road Champions, and we would have returned to the office and eagerly jumped back into planning for our June and July Nationals. Unfortunately, we continue to assess how to best ensure safe and fair events for the remainder of the year.
Two weeks ago, our National Championship update generated conversation and feedback from many riders, parents and coaches about the likely cancellation of our Junior Nationals. This feedback is appreciated and demonstrates how passionate our sport is about the work we love doing for you.
A main consideration to cancel, outside of mass gathering restrictions and safety, is due to the historic feedback we've heard against holding a Junior Nationals during a time when students are in school. The likely cancellation status was not based on a race category, it was based on years of feedback we have received from our membership. We were essentially running out of time to host these events before school began.
However, 2020 is a year full of changes, challenges and maybe some new opportunities. We will consider postponing Junior Nationals to the fall based on community input.
We want to be clear that we are assessing our ability to hold any Nationals this year on a daily basis, including events that are currently postponed, due to the safety issues and restrictions. We are monitoring state re-opening plans and are working with our host communities on contingency plans. If we cannot reasonably ensure the safety of our members, volunteers and host communities we will not run a National Championship.
We will continue to provide status updates in the coming weeks. As the status of COVID-19 changes and evolves, we stand alongside you, holding out hope that we will be able to provide you with a great National Championship experience this year. We will not open any registration until we are confident we can successfully and safely hold an event.
Please continue to ride safe and we pinky promise we will continue to work on these events. We’ll be in touch.
