Nearly 800 athletes from around the country came together July 25-28 in Augusta, Georgia to compete for the Stars and Stripes jersey.

The 2024 USA Cycling Masters & Junior Road National Championships concluded on Sunday, July 28 with 80 National Titles awarded to Masters and Junior categories over the four-day event. 787 athletes from all around the United States competed for the Stars and Stripes jersey in the Individual Time Trial, Road Race, and Criterium.

TIME TRIAL

Speed was the name of the game on day one of the Masters & Junior Road National Championships as riders would test themselves against the clock. Three different distances were used with Junior riders racing on a 15.9-kilometer out-and-back, Masters Men 65+ and Masters Women 55+ competed on a 20.9-kilometer course, and the Men and Women 35-54 age groups raced the longer 29.4-kilometer route. A morning rainstorm caused wet and slippery road conditions for the earlier groups but would clear by afternoon with temperatures and humidity increasing.

On the 15.9-kilometer course, Enzo Hincapie (Greenville, S.C.; EF Education-ONTO) set the best time among the Junior Men, stopping the clock with a 20:01.90. Lily Edwards (Washington, D.C.; DC Devo Racing Academy) was the fastest Junior Woman to ride the 15.9-kilometer with a time of 24:02.66. On the 20.9-kilometer course, John Bertolini (Basking Ridge, N.J.; Team ProPower) took the top step in the Masters Men 65-69 with a time of 29:27.32. Elizabeth Foxx (Williamsburg, Va.; THR Cycling) won the Masters Women 55-59 with a 32:52.81. Jadon Jaeger (Wauwatosa, Wis.; Methods to Winning) three-peated his Men’s 40-44 National Title with a blistering pace of 36:32.70 on the 29.4-kilometer course. In the Masters Women 35-39, Andrea Buttine (Wilmington, N.C.; Fount Cycling Guild) rode away from the competition finishing with a time of 44:10.74.

ROAD RACE

On Friday and Saturday, riders showed their prowess on the 14.7-mile loop near Fort Gordon. The rolling hills and high temperatures made it a race of attrition in many of the fields. On Friday, the first groups to go off were the Junior Men and Junior Women riding one lap of the course. Many familiar faces from the Time Trial showed their endurance with Chase O’Donnell (Delmar, N.Y.; Capital Bicycle Racing Club), Dahlia Hair (Rockville, Md.; Rock Creek Velo), and Lilliana O’Donnell (Delmar, N.Y.; Capital Bicycle Racing Club) claiming their second National Titles of the week. Joe Zukowski (Fort Collins, Colo.; NOCO Cycling Project) would take the Stars and Stripes in the Junior Men’s 13-14 race. Enzo Hincapie (Greenville, S.C.; EF Education-ONTO) sprinted to the win from a group of 30 riders to grab the top step in the Junior Men’s 15-16 race. In the Junior Women’s 15-16 race, Emma Jimenez Palos (Novi, Mich.) came out victorious from a three-up sprint to take home the gold.

The Masters Men 70+ wave consisted of 48 athletes across four age groups who started together to compete two-laps of the course. Last year’s National Champion, Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn.; CTS), was beaten at the line by Thomas Hackleman (Tacoma, Wash.) in the Men’s 70-74. Ken Milne (Norfolk, Mass.) won gold in the Men’s 75-79 and Mike Howard (Brooklyn, N.Y.; Salt Life) went on to win the Men’s 80-84. In this weekend’s oldest category, the Men’s 90-94, Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas; GeriAtrix) added another National Title to his collection.

Fresh off the heels of his Cross-Country Mountain Bike Nationals win last week, Brian McCulloch (Yucaipa, Calif.; Big Wheel Coaching), outsprinted his breakaway group to earn another National Title in the Men’s 40-44. In the Men’s 35-39, Michael Lambert (Platteville, Wis.; Velovit Elite) took home the victory by 3-seconds over a hard chasing field. Chad Burdzilauskas (Madison, Ind.; Texas Roadhouse Cycling) bested his four other break-mates to win the Men’s 45-49. Carlos Casali (Golden, Colo.; The Meteor) powered away from the field and soloed in for the win in the Men’s 50-54. In the Men’s 55-59, Patrick Heaney (Mountain View, Calif.; Coretechs Cycling TwT) was crowned National Champion. Christopher Hahn (Santa Barbara, Calif.; 805 Race Team) was able to gain a small advantage in the Men’s 60-64 and win gold.

In the Masters Women 35+ wave, 70 athletes toed the line to race three-laps of the 14.7-mile course. Masters Women 65+ raced two-laps. Jennifer Wheeler (Georgetown, Ky.; Fount Cycling Guild) finished in the fastest time and won the Women’s 40-44.
