Carson, Calif. – The penultimate day of the 2019 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships saw 18 more titles awarded and multiple riders adding to their week’s medal haul at the VELO Sports Center in Carson, Calif., on Saturday, August 31, 2019. Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Sisterhood of Cycling) continued her winning ways and recorded yet another World Record, her third of the championships.
“It feels fantastic. Going into this, I was very uncertain on how things were going to end up, and they’ve come together very well,” Baker said after her third win in the 80-84 age group of the week. “I want to show women that they don’t have to give up something they love doing just because they hit a certain age. The human body was meant to move, and if you keep it moving, it’s amazing how far you can take it.”
Baker’s third World Record of the week was set in the Women’s 80-84 Sprint 200-meter qualification with her time of 21.224. Also, in Women’s Sprint racing, Karen Purtill (Narragansett, R.I./Stedman’s/Meltsnow Racing) took gold in the 60-64 group.
The morning session saw Kimberly Pettit (Tulsa, Okla./CWA Racing p/b Trek) capture her third Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the week with a win in the Women’s 50-54 Pursuit, an event she finished second in a year ago (2:36.316). And the Women’s 35-39 Time Trial win went to Dawn Orwick (Westminster, Colo./Hammer Racing Team p/b Thorne) (37.353).
Ethan Boyes (San Francisco/JAKROO) defended another title, winning the Men’s 40-44 Time Trial (1:07.215), and collecting his second Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the championships.
Chris Carlson (McKinney, Texas/Matrix/RBM) captured gold in the Men’s 55-59 Pursuit (2:18.629) to defend another title, and also record his third win of the week. In the 60-64 Pursuit, Lawrence Nolan (Fremont, Calif./Cal-Nat’s Racing) took the win (2:25.285) and also held on to his title, his second of the week. This was title would be Nolan’s 60th in his career.
Chris Waggoner (North Plains, Ore./Therapeutic Associates) won his second gold this week, finishing on top of the podium in the Men’s 35-39 Scratch, and in the Men’s 45-49 Points Race, David Iglewicz (Phoenixville, Pa./PA Masters p/b Piscitello Law) claimed the Stars and Stripes. In the Women’s 45-49 Points Race, Michelle Seidel (Irvine, Calif./Ironfly) won gold.
Koh Annoura (Houston/Northwest Cycling Club) won the Men’s 50-54 Sprint to retain his title.
Three additional winners were crowned in Women’s Match Sprints. Lisa Nutter (Philadelphia/Big Picture Cycling) won the 55-59 group, Lan Tran (San Diego/SDBC Powered by Spinergy p/b UC Cyclery) hit the gas early to win her gold of the week and defended her title with a win in the 65-69 group, and Bonnie Woodbury (Solana Beach, Calif./Big Picture Cycling) was the winner for the 75-79 group, her first gold medal of the championships.
One day of racing remains at this year’s championships. The event concludes with two sessions on Sunday, September 1, beginning at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT.
