Team USA Recap: Powless and Jorgenson Score First Professional GC Wins; Team USA Takes Cyclocross Worlds

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (January 31 - February 15).

ROAD
Etoile de Bessèges: France

(February 1-5)Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) scored another early-season victory, winning the five-stage Etoile de Bessèges on the final day by one second. It was his second win of the season. Powless placed 2nd on Stage 4 to move up to 2nd place, then placed 8th on the Stage 5 Time Trial to take first overall by a second. He was also 2nd in King of the Mountains classification.

Tour of Oman: Oman

(February 11-15)Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) won the first stage race of his pro career, capturing the top spot at the Tour of Oman by one second. The 23-year-old also won Best Young Rider and Points classifications.

Jorgenson took 4th on Stage 2, won Stage 3, and went into the final, hilly stage 5 with a 5-second lead, staying with challenger Mauri Vansevenant to win the overall title.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (Tour of Valencia): Spain

(February 1-5)Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) kicked off his season with an 8th place finish at the five-stage Tour of Valencia, Spain. He also placed 2nd among young riders and 9th in the points classification. Lawson Craddock (Team Jayco-Alula) was 8th overall in the mountains.

Saudi Tour: Saudi Arabia

(January 30-February 3)Will Barta (Movistar) took 8th at the five-stage Saudi Tour, his first stage race of the season. Barta placed 5th on Stage 4 and his support was key for teammate and overall winner Ruben Guerreiro.

UCI Cyclocross World Championships: Hoogerheide, Netherlands

(February 3-5) – Team USA captured a slew of top-20 spots at this year’s Cyclocross World Championships, held in Hoogerheide, Netherlands. On opening day, the team of Curtis White(Steve Tilford Foundation), Daniel English (Bear National Team), Lizzy Gunsalus (Steve Tilford Foundation), Vida Lopez de San Roman (Bear National Team), Madigan Munro (Trek Factory Racing), and Andrew Strohmeyer (CXHAIRS Devo Trek Bikes) took 6th in the first-ever team relay world championship.

On days 2 and 3, Madigan Munro (Trek Factory Racing) took 11th and Lizzy Gunsalus (Steve Tilford Foundation) 15th in the women’s U23 race; Vida Lopez de San Roman (Bear National Team) took 11th and Kaya Musgrave (Bear National Team) placed 15th in the women’s junior race, while Daniel English (Bear National) placed 13th and David Thompson (FinKraft Junior Cycling) 16th in the men’s junior race. On the elite women’s side, Clara Honsinger (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) placed 16th.
