Tech Director Update - July 2023

By: Bonnie Walker  July 21, 2023

We're halfway through the summer already?!

The last couple of months have been busy. We just completed our ninth National Championship of the year and our fifth since the beginning of June. Many thanks to those who officiated and contributed to the success of these events. We said “See you later” to Knoxville as our host for Pro Road Nationals after seven years. We’ve become quite fond of the city with its southern hospitality, great coffee shops, microbreweries, and restaurants.

National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) Membership

It’s time to renew your NASO membership! If you aren’t familiar with NASO, they are a member-driven community of 28,000+ referees, umpires, judges, assigners, and sports leaders that exists to unite, celebrate, develop, and protect officials everywhere. You can find more information on their website.

Our group pricing benefit gives you the opportunity to engage in NASO's extra assurance and security while working as an official. You can review the benefits of being a member by visiting the NASO benefits section on their website. Our group renewal price is $89/member, which is a savings of $35 off the regular membership price of $124.

We will be utilizing BikeReg to renew or purchase your membership until August 4, 11:59 PM MDT, at which time the offer will close. Please note, BikeReg adds a small service fee to the cost of the renewal.

Whether you are an assigner for a Local Association or working events as an official, you are encouraged to take advantage of this benefit.

Commissaire Commentaries Podcast

We are excited to announce our new podcast series, Commissaire Commentaries, hosted by Ryan Fu and Marcie Weiss. The goal of the podcast is to increase awareness of bicycle race officials, spark interest in officiating, share best practices, and build a stronger officiating community.

The podcasts are available on USA Cycling’s YouTube channel, as well as links directly from our Officials webinar page. If you are interested in being a guest or have an idea for an upcoming podcast, please email usac.officials.podcast@gmail.com directly.

Officials Webinars

If you were unable to attend the webinars we held earlier this year, the recorded versions are available on the Officials webinar page, as well as USA Cycling’s YouTube channel.

Look for additional webinars to be scheduled later this year.

Cyclo-cross National Assignments

The national-level cyclo-cross assignment requests are currently being reviewed and should be available for review by the end of the month.

New Officials and Motor Referees

The list of new officials continues to grow! Everyone is excited to start contributing to their new roles but may need some guidance on how to get started in their state or local association. If you are the officials' assigner in your area, please reach out and welcome them to the community. You may find the complete list at the link below. Officials highlighted are those that completed their requirements since the last TD Update.
