Tech Director Update - September 2022

By: Bonnie Walker  September 22, 2022

Our first UCI cyclo-cross race of the season was held last weekend in Roanoke, VA and we couldn’t be happier to say “Cross is here!”. Our office is busy gearing up for the last four National Championships of the year and a little reprieve from travel. While the off-season might seem like a little break, we’re already busy making plans for 2023 and beyond. Lots of work to do!

2021 Official of the Year

It has been a busy year! Unfortunately, one of the things that fell by the wayside was the announcement of the 2021 Official of Year awards. The committee reviewed all of the responses received, and the following were selected:

The Golden Stopwatch Award has been awarded to Chris Clark. Chris is from Minnesota, where he spends countless hours coordinating race assignments to properly staff events and facilitate a development path for officials. In addition, he is approachable and willing to share his experiences and techniques with others to help foster their growth. In 2021, Chris passed the UCI Elite National Commissaire Track course, where he is now recognized as one of the high-level track officials in the US.

The Silver Stopwatch Award has been awarded to Scott Patton. Scott is from Georgia, where he continually emphasizes safety, fair competition, and community development. He is the officials' coordinator for Georgia and stepped up to fulfill the coordinator's role in Alabama when the need arose. As an active motor referee, Scott takes pride in recruiting and fostering new motor referees.

The Bronze Stopwatch Award has been awarded to Jim Crompton. Jim resides in Nevada and has spent the better part of 40 years as an official. He rose to the highest level as an international commissaire in mountain bike and cyclocross but also reached the national level in road and track. Jim retired from officiating in 2020 but has touched many of us with his countless hours of mentoring and sharing his expertise in what it meant to be an outstanding official.
