Coaches' Resources

CEUs & Education

After temporarily suspending CEU requirements for licensed cycling coaches in 2020, we are reintroducing continuing education requirements for coach licensure in 2024. This year, the program will undergo a transitional phase as we enhance and retool our coach education program for 2025.

During the disruption caused by the pandemic, many forms of bike racing were canceled, leading to challenges for coaches as athletes shifted their focus to alternative activities such as socially distanced riding and indoor cycling. To support coaches during this period, we temporarily suspended our CEU requirement and instead collaborated with Fast Talk Laboratories to provide a free, self-paced coaching education resource entirely online. This initiative also included several live discussion sessions to foster connections among coaches despite the ongoing challenges.

By resuming CEU requirements, we achieve four important goals:

1. We support coaches by providing a growth path to evolve skills.

2. We ensure that USA Cycling certified coaches offer the best coaching experience for all types of riders.

3. We show our continued commitment to coaching as we build toward a revamped coaching education program in 2025.

4. We demonstrate the rigor and quality of your coaching certification.

We know there’s no substitute for real-world coaching experience, but coaching education is critical to meeting the evolving needs of all types of athletes.

What are CEUs?

CEUs are a valuable way for coaches to stay on top of the advancements in coaching to further assist their athletes. Below you will find important information on USA Cycling CEU policies as well as how to acquire your CEUs to keep your coaching license valid.

CEU Program Overview

All USA Cycling coaches must complete a total of 6 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) by December 31, 2024 in order to maintain their status as an active USA Cycling coach and subsequently renew their USA Cycling coaching license.

In an effort to ensure quality and consistency across all coaching levels, at least 4 of the 6 required CEUs must come from the Coach Athlete Communication module or a The Art and Science of Training Plan Creation module (worth 4 CEUs each). The remaining CEUs may be earned via a variety of pre-approved online and in-person events and training modules. View the full list of approved CEU options here.

Beginning in 2025 coaches will be required to complete 30* CEUs over a two year period in order to maintain or advance their coaching license.

We are proud to partner with Fast Talk Labs to offer (2) 4-credit CEU courses plus a series of live professional development events.

*2025 requirements subject to change prior to December 31, 2024.

Coaching Requirements:

In order to maintain their status as a USA Cycling Coach through 2024, coaches of all levels must meet the following requirements:

1. Complete 6 Continuing Education Unit credits (CEUs) in 2024. Four of which must be in Coach-Athlete Communication or Training Plan Creation.

2. Be up to date with Safe Sport training as required by the US Center for SafeSport

3. Pass a background check

4. Hold a valid USA Cycling Coaching License

How much can I expect to pay?

Pricing and course duration for 2024 will be similar to past CEU programs, to maintain continuity of expectations with coaches as we resume the CEU requirement.

How do I report my CEUs?

Because the CEU program will be hosted exclusively through the Fast Talk Labs platform through 2024, coaches will no longer need to report their course completions to USA Cycling as completed CEUs will be reported automatically.

CEU Provider Program

The goal of the CEU Provider program is to provide USA Cycling coaches with quality education to help them effectively coach cyclists.
