Krista Doebel-Hickock’s #RideToTokyo

By: Angelina Palermo  August 14, 2020

With Krista’s nomination to the Road Cycling Olympic Long Team, we’re excited to see her get one step closer to achieving her Olympic dreams. We talked with Krista and asked her about the top moments in her life that have made her the athlete that she is today.

2012 my first race – I drove a few hours down to my first road race with my dad. I was up all night worried that everyone would clip in and bolt off leaving me forever right when the gun went off. So, there I was in the wee morning hours on my trainer with target winter gloves and running headband—clearly just a few months out of my running career.

2012 State Championship Cat 3/4 RR Win – This felt like a huge victory. To win solo. To win a championship. To upgrade to Cat 1/2. It felt like a big stepping stone.

2014 1st Stage 3 Cascade Cycling Classic – My first actually big win! My first UCI win. My first USADA anti-doping test. And I didn’t even know I had won until USADA came to me and my teammates came running.

2015 1st Stage 5 Tour de Feminin and 1st Stage 5 Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche – My first Euro trip and to come away with 2 stage wins. It was like I couldn’t believe what was happening, and it made me hungry for more.

2016 Strade Bianche – my first broken collarbone, my first surgery. How bad do you want this? Really bad. I’d be back racing the next month and suffer a second break.

2016 Giro Rosa – So brutal. I think the pictures show the emotions and strain of completing my first Giro Rosa. I never would have survived without my sweet teammates.

2016 1st USA Cycling Hill Climb Nationals – Bounced back from a crash-ridden season to win the first-ever Hill Climb Nationals. With my aunt making her way to the summit to see the moment I crossed the line. It was so special to achieve something I could feel proud of with family around.

2017 ATOC 3rd Stage 2 – My first WWT podium. I was disappointed and proud of my ride all at once.

2017 Women's Tour crash – Just when I felt like my season was building and I was growing in the sport, I literally smashed into a center island. I didn’t understand the consequences of this until many months later when I’d try to get myself together physically and mentally for my second Giro Rosa.

2018 5th Littleton Twilight Crit and 4th GC Colorado Classic – CO trip! Altitude blocks spent in Colorado Springs where my coach Dean Golich lives or in Englewood where my Aunt lives are always a highlight. The 2018 trip was extra special because my team had stopped racing me and it was all up to me to make something of the form, fitness and desire that I had.

2019 3rd Stage 2 Santos Women’s Tour Down Under and 4th GC – To kick off the season with my new team and have great success was such a positive motivating experience. I’ll never forget taking a chance and going on the finishing climb during the Queen’s stage and fighting for bonus sprints in the final stage.

2019 1st Stage 3 Redlands Bicycle Classic – To come back to the USA and see that I can WIN with Rally Cycling backing me set me up to continue to have my best season ever.
