Para-cycling Road Race kick off day 1 of championships in Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA. JUNE 13, 2018 — The 2018 USA Cycling Masters & Para-cycling Road National Championships kicked off today with the Para-cycling road races and handcycle relays.

The men and women’s T1, T2, and H1 riders were first off this morning, doing 2 laps of the 10.8 km course. Barry Wilcox (Team Endurance) took the H1 race in a time of 1:15:13, bettering his place last year from silver to gold. Jill Walsh (Peace Cycling Performance), Ryan Boyle (Peace Cycling Performance) and Ryan Sykes (Peace Cycling Performance) took the top step in the women’s T2, men’s T2, and the men’s T1 races respectively.

The second wave of the day saw the remaining handcycles events take to the course. Jenna Rollman (Team PossAbilities) took home the stars-and-stripes in the women’s H3 event. William Groulx (Paralyzed Veterans of America Racing) took the men’s H2 event for the third year in a row. Like Groulx, David Randall (Team Roger C Peace) also 3-peated his gold medal status in the men’s H3 road race. Travis Gaertner took the win for the men’s H4 race in a time of 57:07. Solomon Revils (Paralyzed Veterans of America Racing) took the men’s H5 title in a time of 1:04:21.

In the third wave of the day, the women’s C1-5 and men’s C1-3 took the course to do 43.2 km. Rebecca Piper (Peace Cycling Performance) earned the women’s C2 title in 1:24:37, Jamie Whitmore (TWENTY20 Pro Cycling) grabbed C3 gold in a time of 1:17:47, Shawn Morelli (UnitedHealthcare) won the women’s C4 division in 1:17:05, and Samantha Bosco notched the women’s C5 victory in 1:17:05. Billy Lister won the men’s C1 race in 1:16:34, Aaron Keith (Team Roger C Peace) took the men’s C2 division in 1:16:27, Joseph Berenyi (ABD Cycling Team) paced the men’s C3 group in 1:16:26 for the win.

The noon wave consisted of the BVI tandem teams and the men’s C4 & C5 events. Chester Triplett (VeloVets) and his pilot Stephen Pedone won the men’s BVI division in 1:57:08, while Kristin Fleschner and teammate Liesel McAllister (Team Elevate Racing) won the women’s BVI race in 2:16:05. Noah Middlestaedt took the top stop in the men’s C4 race in a time of 2:03:36. Nicholas Gibb (Team Roger C Peace) claimed the gold of the men’s C5 division, stopping the clock at 2:03:31.

In the first ever handcycle relay national championships, the team of Will Groulx, Ryan Pinney, and David Berling captured the gold in the inaugural event. The team crossed the line in a final time of 25:27.3.
