Celebrating Growth on and off the Course: Scott Preston Advances to USA Cycling Level 2 Coach

Scott Preston earns his USA Cycling Level 2 coaching certification and continues building pathways for developing mountain bike athletes.

Advancement in coaching is rarely about a single race result or a sudden breakthrough. It reflects a consistent, deliberate commitment to mastering the craft, guiding athletes with integrity, and continuing to learn. USA Cycling is proud to celebrate Coach Scott Preston on his advancement from Level 3 to Level 2 Intermediate Certified Coach.

Scott’s roots in competitive cycling run deep. After earning his initial Level 3 certification in the early 2000s, cycling became woven into every facet of his life, from meeting his wife through the sport to sharing weekly rides with his family and watching his three children grow into active racers. Over the past five years, Scott has turned that lifelong passion into structured impact on the dirt. He serves as the Head Coach of the Wasatch High School Mountain Bike Team and guides athletes with the SOHO Cycling Team at Soldier Hollow, where he is actively helping build out a U23 development pathway designed to prepare riders for national and international competition, right up to the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

Earning the Level 2 Intermediate credential marks a key step along the USA Cycling coaching pathway. The transition requires coaches to pair classroom knowledge with proven field performance, requiring advanced coursework, targeted specializations, active athlete development to national-level competition, and ongoing safety education. Scott’s achievement demonstrates his dedication to meeting rigorous professional standards while expanding the opportunities available to his athletes.

Beyond the technical milestones, Scott brings a grounded philosophy to his coaching. Drawing parallels from his professional background in wealth management, he approaches rider development with a compound-interest mindset: establish a plan, trust the process, stay disciplined through challenges, and avoid letting short-term emotions derail long-term objectives. Whether preparing high school racers for their first regional start or steering athletes toward national championships, his focus remains on building resilient team culture, celebrating collective progress, and fostering a genuine love for riding that lasts a lifetime.

Please join us in congratulating Coach Scott Preston on this well-deserved milestone in his coaching journey.

Coach Bio

Scott Preston has been consistently coaching mountain biking for the past five years, but his involvement in cycling and coaching goes back much further. He became a Level 3 USA Cycling coach in the early 2000s and has spent much of his life around competitive cycling. He and his wife originally met through a cycling team in the early 2000s, and cycling continues to be a big part of their family. Their three children all love riding and racing bikes, and Scott and his wife still make time to get out and ride together several times each week.

Scott currently serves as Head Coach of the Wasatch High School Mountain Bike Team and coaches the SOHO Cycling Team at Soldier Hollow. For 2027, SOHO is expanding its development pathway to include a U23 program, with the goal of helping athletes continue progressing beyond high school and ultimately earn opportunities to compete at the highest levels of the sport—including the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup on SOHO's home course at Soldier Hollow.

Scott's coaching philosophy is centered around long-term development, consistency, team culture, and helping athletes believe in the process. He believes that success rarely comes from one workout, race, or breakthrough. It comes from doing the small things consistently, following the plan, learning from setbacks, and continuing to improve year after year.

His goal is to help athletes dream big while staying focused on sustainable progress and developing a lifelong love of cycling. He emphasizes values such as working hard, doing hard things, respecting others, celebrating teammates, taking ownership, and remembering to enjoy the process.

Scott sees a strong connection between his work as a cycling coach and his career in wealth management. In both roles, his job is ultimately to help people establish a plan, remain disciplined when things get difficult, believe in the process, and avoid allowing short-term emotions to derail long-term goals. Whether he is helping an athlete prepare for a national-level race or helping a family work toward their financial goals, the philosophy is very similar: follow the plan, trust the process, and give yourself enough time for consistency to compound into meaningful results.
