Day 1 of #CXNats Brought Flurries to the Non-Championship Races

The first riders hit the course today in Cantigny Park marking an exciting week of racing ahead.

DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. - The 2021 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships began on Tuesday afternoon with the Non-Championship races. The air was brisk and the park grounds were frozen as riders began pre-riding. Temperatures would reach a whopping 21 degrees as racing began. With snow flurries late in the day, riders not only had to navigate the technical and challenging course but also had to battle the elements.

Men 23-29 Non-Championship

Our Men 23-29 Non-Championship race kicked off the week at Cantigny Park. Finishing in a time of 00:33.23 Andy Scott (Newburyport, Mass.; Riverside Racing) would take the first win of the week. Finishing 25-seconds behind Scott would be Dan Teaters (Green Bay, Wisc.; Broken Spoke Racing) racing for Broken Spoke Racing.

3- Matthew Graham-O'Regan (Lexington, Mass.; Pratt Racing)

Women 23-29 Non-Championship

Our first Women’s race of the week would be the Women’s 23-29 Non-Championship race. Taking first place would be Erin Omara (Brighton, Mich.; Greater Flint Athletic Club). Second place finisher Katie Paradis (Minneapolis, Minn.; Guaranteed Rate Cycling) would finish her race 52-seconds behind Omara.

3- Mason Hopkins (Henrico, Va.; Warren Wilson College)

Women 40+ Non-Championship

The cold wouldn’t slow down the 40+ Women’s Non-Championship racers, as Anne Fleming (Spokane Valley, Wash.; School of Cross) would finish in a time of 28.59. Fleming would ride a strong and consistent race resulting in her gold place finish.

2- Julie Robertson Zivin (Seattle, Wash.; Team Thrive)

3- Katie Isermann (Chicago, Ill.; Psimet Racing)

Men 40-49 Non-Championship

In a battle to the finish, Tim Strelecki (Geneva, Ill.) would take the win over second-place racer Justin Morgan (Park City, Utah; Fieldriders). Lars Lofgren (Folsom, Calif.; Cycling Development Nationals Team) would finish only 51-seconds back riding in to take third.

Men 50+ Non-Championship

40+ racers took to the starting like in the 50+ racing age category. Paul Bourcier (Eugene, Ore.; Elliston Coaching) and Tom Ryse (Spokane, Wash.; School of Cross) went head-to-head for 25-minutes. Bourcier edged out Ryse to take the win with Tim Doelman (Glencoe, Ill.; Fairlife) grabbing the third spot.
