Opening Day of #CXNats Features Five Races

By: Peloton Sports  December 11, 2018

Louisville, Ky. -- Racing returned to the Derby City this week with 45 events over six days at the USA Cycling Cyclocross national Championships. The first day of competitions at Joe Creason Park featured five non-championship events, giving athletes a chance to test the new course.

Cyclocross made its debut at Joe Creason Park in 2017 for the Derby City Cup and Pan-American Cyclocross Championships. Centrally located in metro Louisville, it is the first time Joe Creason Park has hosted cyclocross races.

“If you want to experience cycling, Louisville is your city. It is great to have USA Cycling back in Louisville," said Greg Fisher, Mayor of Louisville. "We're really proud too of the 2013 Elite and Masters UCI World Cyclocross Championships at Eva Bandman Park. This event here today is a different course. So to be at Creason (Park) is incredible. This is a tough course. We have sand, we have limestone steps, and of course we have the elevation change. We have a great location right here in the heartland of our country.

"I do want to note that this event is the 40th cycling championship held in Louisville - cyclocross, road, BMX and criterium. We've also hosted four world championships, one Pan American championship, so folks what that means is Louisville is the premier city in the United States of America for cycling. Come on out this weekend and enjoy it."

Sunny conditions greeted competitors on the challenging course, which includes elevation changes, one flyover, one set of barriers, limestone stairs, a sand pit and off-camber ground. The men’s 23-39 non championship event started at noon and was won Jeremy Powers (Southampton, Mass./Fuj/Pactimo/SRAM), finishing the race in 30:25.

The women’s 23-39 and 40+ non-championship events were won by Jenny Wojewoda (Arlington, Mass./Pedal Power Team-MA) in 32:23 and Julie Robertson-Zivin (Seattle, Wash.) in 31:58, respectively.

The men’s 40-49 non-championship event was taken by Molly Cameron (Portland, Ore./Point S Nokian) in 31:48. Day One of the 2018 USA Cyclocross National Championships concluded with JW Miller (Madison, Wis.) racing to victory in 33:41 in the men’s 50+ non championship race.

Day Two of the Championships continue Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. ET and feature Masters events for men and women.

The USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will conclude on Sunday, Dec. 16. Live streaming will be available on USA Cycling’s YouTube channel for the Junior Men’s, youth Women’s (ages 17-22), U23 men’s, Elite Women’s, and Elite Men’s races. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. ET with commentary by Tim Johnson, Meredith Miller and Brad Sohner.
