AUGUSTA, GA. JUNE 14, 2018 — Time trials took center stage on day 2 of the 2018 USA Cycling Masters & Para-cycling Road National Championships in Augusta, Ga. today. Over 350 racers contested the event on the new courses on Fort Gordon.
The morning session decided three trike titles, where Ryan Boyle (Monroe, Conn./Peace Cycling Performance) took home gold in a time of 25:35.55 for the men’s T2, women’s T2 were next, where yesterday’s champion, Jill Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Peace Cycling Performance), reach the top step again in a time of 30:31.84, and Ryan Sykes (Grass Valley. Calif./Peace Cycling Performance) doubled up his gold standard from yesterday in the men’s T1, finishing in a time of 46:17.59.
In hand cycling action, Barry Wilcox (West Jordan, Utah/Team Endurance 360) crossed in 54:47.54 for the men’s H1 title, Will Groulx (Portland, Ore./Paralyzed Veterans Racing) surged for the H2 win in 28:47.83, Matthew Updike (Denver) grabbed H3 gold in 26:10.93, Tom Davis (Fremont, Ind.) earned the H4 win in 23:29.40, and Oscar Sanchez (San Diego) rolled through in a time of 47:40.97, claiming his victory in the men’s C5.
Jenna Rollman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Team PossAbilites) won women’s H3 gold in 35:50.55.
Billy Lister (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) won the men’s C1 race in 23:44.91, Aaron Keith (Woodinville, Wash./Team Roger C Peace) took the men’s C2 division in 23:11.86, Joseph Berenyi (Oswego, Ill./ABD Cycling Team) took the top stop of the men’s C3 group in a time of 47:24.17, Cody Young (San Diego/ Team Roger C Peace) stopped the clock at 42:56.03 for gold in the men’s C4, and Kyle Pittman (Denver/Palmares Racing) took home the stars-and-stripes in the men’s C5 in a time of 44:08.49.
Rebecca Piper (Longmont, Colo./ Peace Cycling Performance) speed toward the women’s C2 title in 37:50.83, Jamie Whitmore (Mount Aukum, Calif./TWENTY20 Pro Cycling) punched the clock at 25:33.67 for women’s C3 gold, Shawn Morelli (Meadville, Penn./UnitedHealthcare) won the women’s C4 division in 24:39.63, and Samantha Bosco (Upland, Calif.) took the women’s C5 victory in 24:02.82.
On the tandem side, the team of Amy Dixon (Encinitas, Calif.) and Kirsten Sass (Mckenzie, Tenn.) took home the women’s BVI gold in a time of 46:13.26. For the men, Chester Triplett (Mooresville, N.C./VeloVets) and Stephen Pedone (Tucson, Ariz.) took home gold in a time of 40:35.03.
The masters racing kicked off with the men’s 65-69 time trial, with Pete Leousis (Hillsborogh, N.C./Triangle Velo) taking the top step in a time of 28:22.99, Jeff Swartout (Harrison, Ohio/Queen City Wheels) took the men’s 70-74 title in 28:17.69, S Durward Higgins (Chattanooga, Tenn./Scenic City Velo) stopped the clock at 29:45.08 taking the gold for the 75-79 race, Daniel Ellefson (Banner Elk, N.C./360 Racing) took the 80-84 title in a time of 37:21.20. and our oldest competitor of the day, Fredric Schmid (Waco, Texas/Waco Bicycle Club), took home gold in the 85+ age group, in a time of 36:53.12.
In the women’s 55-59 Kathy Petrillo (Jupiter, Fla.) crossed the line in a time of 29:55.13, ensuring her victroy, Pat Caldeira (Crofton, Md.) won the women’s 60-64 race in a time of 30:01.05, women’s 65-69 winner, Elizabeth Tyrell (Annandale, N.J./Sturdy Girl Cycling), finished in a time of 34:04.91, and Jeanne Davis (Earleville, N.J./Somerset Wheelmen) took home the stars-and-stripes in the 70-74 division in a time of 45:01.82.
Justin Maciekowicz (Saint Louis/Korte Hammer Down Racing), winner for the men’s 35-39 race, set the fast time of the day on the 30 km course, clocking in at 39:28.63. Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala.) took the men’s 40-44 title in a time of 40:07.14, Daniel Bryant (Loomis, Calif./Chronos Racing) punched the clock in a time of 39:49.97, taking the men’s 45-49 gold, multi-time national champion Daniel Casper (Lauderdale, Minn./Donkey Label) staked his claim on the men’s 50-54 race finishing in 39:40.04, Brendan Sullivan (Atlanta/There’s A Train Coming) took the men’s 55-59 in a time of 41:42.74, and the men’s 60-64 was won by Michael Adams (Tampa, Fla./GearLink Racing INC) in a time of 43:07.69.
Anina Blankenship (University City, Mo./The Cyclery Racing Team) won the women’s 35-39 race in a time of 45:30.45, in the women’s 40-44, Shannon Kaplan (Philadelphia) took the top spot in a time of 47:57.19, world record holder Molly Van Houweling (Berkeley, Calif./Revolution Racing Team) stopped the clock at 45:07.31 making her the fastest woman of the day on the long course, and Gina Kavesh (Bellvue, Wash./Union Bay Cycling) took the last gold of the day in the women’s 50-54 event in a tim e of 48:52.80.
