As 2024 draws to a close, Search for Speed is sprinting toward its goal: LA 2028. In just its second year, the program achieved remarkable success, hosting 26 events and welcoming hundreds of participants through combine and tryout testing. The mission to identify and develop America's fastest track cycling talent is progressing at an exciting rate.
Riders like Sterling Reneau and Hayley Yoslov are training daily on the VELO Sports Center track, pushing to get better, faster, and stronger. Thanks to our industry partners, Search for Speed athletes are riding cutting-edge equipment designed to maximize speed and performance: LOOK bikes with Corima wheels, equipped with Vittoria tires.
"As a Track Program Manager and a longtime mechanic at USA Cycling, I’m thrilled to see our athletes training on Vittoria Pista Control tires. These tires deliver exceptional grip on steep wooden tracks while maintaining low rolling resistance, making them our go-to choice for daily training. When it’s time to race, we rely exclusively on Vittoria’s Pista Speed and Pista Oro tires, trusted for their unmatched performance under pressure," said Rex Ainslie.
Vittoria’s high-speed tires are setting the standard for elite-level training, ensuring every ride counts in the journey toward LA 2028.
With continued support from industry-leading brands, Search for Speed will ramp up recruitment efforts across the greater Los Angeles area, adding more open combines to the program in 2025. These open combines will be accessible and straightforward, offering a direct path for aspiring athletes to be seen by USA Cycling’s National Sprint Team coaches and sports science staff.
In addition to peak power metrics, watts per kilo will take on greater importance in evaluating talent. Recognizing the physiological differences across ages and body sizes, Search for Speed is implementing tiered power targets to ensure fair, balanced standards. A developing 17-year-old, for example, won’t be held to the same power benchmarks as a 27-year-old, creating opportunities for young riders to showcase their potential.
USA Cycling’s performance objectives remain clear and focused. The program is on a mission to identify, develop, and prepare athletes who will represent the U.S. on the world stage at Search for Speed’s home track at the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
Stay tuned for the release of the 2025 event calendar, which will outline opportunities to participate in Search for Speed combines. All combines will take place at the Velo Sports Center, the home of USA Cycling’s National Sprint program, in Carson, Calif.
The sprint toward the Olympic podium starts here, with dedication, top-tier coaching, and partners like Vittoria Tires powering every lap. Learn more about Vittoria Tires, the Official Tire Supplier of USA Cycling, by clicking here.
Search for Speed would not be possible without the support of LOOK Cycle, Corima Wheels, Vittoria Tires, Wattbike, and the VELO Sports Center. Thank you for an incredible two years, with many more to come!
