Team USA Closes 2021 Junior Track Worlds with Five Top-5 Finishes

By: Angelina Palermo  September 05, 2021

The junior track team is headed back to the U.S. after a successful effort in Cairo, Egypt.

Team USA finishes up the 2021 UCI Junior Track World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, with performances in the Junior Women’s Keirin and Junior Men’s Elimination Race.

In five days of competition, the team saw five top-five performances over five events. When discussing what the team expected, coach Joanne Kiesanowski said, “We didn’t know the level of our four athletes coming in because they haven’t raced internationally in over two years. It’s been amazing to see that they are at the highest level in the world. To come away with a World Championship, a silver, a bronze, and two fourth places is incredible. It’s really nice that we can go home with these results and inspire the juniors that are going to come up in the next few years.”

Keirin

After her fourth-place finish in the Sprints on Thursday, Mia Deye (Geigertown, Pa.; Star Track Racing) was back on the boards for the Junior Women’s Keirin event. Starting in Heat 3 of 4, Deye placed third by less than six-hundredths of a second, forcing her to go into the repechages. It was a hard-fought battle in the rep ride, but unfortunately, Deye placed second in her heat and would not advance to the semifinals.
