Team USA Recap: 17 Medals for Team USA at Paracycling Road Worlds; Freeburn and Onweller Win Elite Gravel National Champs; Kuss takes 5th at Vuelta
ROAD
Vuelta a España: Spain
(August 22-September 13) – Sepp Kuss (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was the top-placing American with a 5th place finish overall at this year’s Tour of Spain, which started in Monaco and ended in Granada. Spain’s Enric Mas, who’d placed second three times at the Vuelta, won the race marking his first Grand Tour victory.
Four other Americans competed at the Vuelta: Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), Larry Warbasse (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Will Barta (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), and Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Team Emirates-XRG). Vermaerke also placed 6th in Points and 10th in the Mountain categories.

Finistère Ladies Classic: France
(September 5) – Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) placed 2nd in a photo-finish sprint at this year’s Finistère Ladies Classic, a 94.1-kilometer road race packed with repeated short climbs, in Brittany. Canadian Sarah van Dam earned her first pro win.

Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec: Québec City, Canada
(September 11) – Top pro men’s teams from around the globe took on this year’s GP Quebec, riding 20 laps of a 10.3-kilometer hilly circuit to kick off a weekend of UCI racing in Canada. Road race national champion Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) was the top-placing American, coming in 5th behind the winner, Remco Evenepoel. Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was 8th.

Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal: Montréal, Canada
(September 13) – Two days after the Quebec GP, the peloton took on the 214.4 kilometer GP Montreal. Americans again captured two of the top spots in the hilly, 16-lap race, with Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) placing 3rd behind his teammate and winner Isaac Del Toro, and Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) coming in 4th, just three seconds behind McNulty, in 5:13:46.

UCI Paracycling Road World Championships: Huntsville, Alabama
(September 4-7) – This year’s UCI Paracycling Road World Championships proved to be one of Team USA’s most successful ever, with a total of six golds, five silver and six bronze medals earned by the 28-member squad, along with a number of top-10 spots. Rocket City (Huntsville, Alabama) hosted events featuring individual time trial and road race titles for all paracycling divisions, as well as mixed H1-5 Team Relays.
Gold medalists: Kate Brim (WH2 Time Trial and WH2 Road Race); Samantha Bosco(WC4 Time Trial and WC4 Road Race); Emi Perry (WH4 Time Trial); Elouan Gardon (MC5 Time Trial)

Green Mountain Stage Race: Vermont
(September 4-7) – Elite and age-group cyclists tackled four days of racing, featuring an opening day time trial, followed by a circuit race, road race and criterium, at Vermont’s Green Mountain Stage Race. The race also served as the 9th and final stop on the Junior Road Cycling National Series.
Megan Guarnier (CCB Kenetik p/b Levine Law Group) won the overall Women’s Pro/1/2/3 title, followed by Scout Wellmeier (Bear National Team) and Lily Edwards (CCB Kenetik p/b Levine Law Group) in 2nd and 3rd.
Cameron Hampton (Kelly Benefits Strategies Cycling) won the Pro men’s title. Logan Unger (SpeedBlock-Terún Elite) and Owen Wright (RNRNYC Racing p/b R1) placed 2ndand 3rd.
The junior men’s overall title went to Alex Snider (EF Education-ONTO). Charlie Sanderson (NorthStar Development), Devin Sommerville (Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team), Jacob Glass-Tu (Top Step Development) and Miguel Davis (SP De Molenspurters Meulebeke) placed 2nd-5th.
Racing with the Pro/1/2/3 women, Lara Miguel (Team California Academy) was the top-placing junior 15-16, placing 11th overall. Twin sisters Abby Cole (Competitive Edge Racing) and Lily Cole (Competitive Edge Racing) placed 2nd and 3rd behind Miguel.
Scout Wellmeier (Bear National Team) was the top-placing junior 17-18 woman, placing 2ndoverall. Lily Edwards (CCB Kenetik p/b Levine Law Group) and Sofia Tricevich(SpeedBlock-Terún Elite) were 2nd and 3rd behind Wellmeier.

Gateway Cup, American Criterium Cup: St. Louis, Missouri
(September 4-7) – The Gateway Cup featured four days of racing in four St. Louis neighborhoods, including the sixth and final stop of the American Criterium Cup. Sunday’s Giro Della Montagna served as ACC race day and unlike the other ACC courses, included an uphill section amidst the flat, fast course.
Preston Eye (Clif Family Drifters Cycling) and Barbara Guarischi (Team SD Worx ProTime) won the elite men’s and women’s ACC races.
Luke Fetzer (Team Cadence Cyclery p/b Waldo Racing) and Jim Brown (L39ion of Los Angeles) placed 2nd and 3rd behind Eye.
Kendall Ryan (Caldera Medical x Aurea Racing) and Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28), placed 2nd and 3rd behind Guarischi.
Luke Fetzer was the pro men’s Omnium champion, followed by Preston Eye and Jim Brown. Skylar Schneider (L39ion of Los Angeles) was the women’s Omnium champion, followed by Marlies Mejias Garcia and Olivia Cummins (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28).
The men’s and women’s winners of the overall ACC series were Justin Williams (L39ion of Los Angeles) and Skylar Schneider.
Preston Eye and Lucas Bourgoyne (Team Cadence Cyclery p/b Waldo Racing) were 2ndand 3rd behind Williams. Aline Seitz (HigherDose/Renova) and Claudia Marcks (Pedla Race Division) were 2nd and 3rd in the women’s series.

GRAVEL
USA Cycling Gravel National Championships: La Crescent, Minnesota
(September 12) – Cobe Freeburn (Trek Driftless) won the elite men’s title and Paige Onweller (Trek Driftless) took the elite women’s crown at this year’s Gravel National Championships, held in the Midwest’s Driftless Region.
Riders in 42 categories vied for national titles over three courses covering 107, 68 and 31 miles at the championships, now in their fourth year.
In the elite men’s 107-mile race, Cole Davis (SpeedStudio p/b Basso) sprinted for 2nd ahead of Griffin Easter (OpiCure Gravel p/b Orbea and Catellis SOG), who placed 3rd.
Onweller won the sprint against Sarah Lange at the end, with Emma Langley (Ventum/DT Swiss/Kenda/Rule28/Monolith) placing 3rd.
The championships also served as this season’s final stop in the USA Cycling Junior Gravel National Series, with juniors taking on the 68-mile course.
Greyson Wimberley (OZ Racing) won the men’s 15-16 title. Martin Gill (EF-Onto) and Julian Lavoie (VTAC) placed 2nd and 3rd.
Anna Morozowich (Bear National Team) won the women’s 15-16 title ahead of sister Leah Morozowich (Bear National Team) and Kinsley Oberding, who placed 2nd and 3rd.
Carter Lembke (Lunhcbox Racing) won the men’s 17-18 crown. Preston Ronck (Cannibal B. Victorious) and Logan Drevlow (Bear Devo) placed 2nd and 3rd.
Heidi Hansen (Fount Cycling Guild) won the women’s 17-18 title. Kate Elwell (Zangi Bikes Racing) and Ammi Boyle (OZ Racing) placed 2nd and 3rd.

MOUNTAIN BIKE
UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships: San Martino di Castrozza, Trentino, Italy
(September 12-13) – Team USA earned three top-10 spots at this year’s MTB Elite Marathon World Championships, a 95-kilometer course with some 4,000 meters of climbing through the Dolomites.
Melisa Rollins placed 4th and Savilia Blunk was 5th in the elite women’s race, and defending men’s world champion Keegan Swenson placed 7th on the elite men’s side.
In addition to Rollins, Blunk and Swenson, Deanna Mayles placed 12th and Hannah Rae Otto was 13th; in the elite men’s race, Cole Paton placed 23rd.
Germany’s Andreas Seewald won the elite men’s race in 4:33:47. The elite women’s race was won by Switzerland’s Anna Weinbeer (5:30:54).

USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships: Indianapolis, Indiana
(September 10-13) – Collegiate track cyclists from across the US vied for national titles over three days of racing at this year’s Collegiate Track National Championships, held at the Indy Cycloplex’s Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis.
Colorado Mesa University won the Varsity Team Omnium title, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the Club Team Omnium title.
Fred Meredith (Marian University) won the Men’s Omnium title, winning the Pursuit, Points Race and Time Trial.
Ella Sabo (Colorado Mesa University) won the Women’s Omnium Title, winning the Points Race, Scratch and Time Trial.
Oliver Welcker (Colorado Mesa University) and Jackson Clary (Marian University) placed 2nd and 3rd in the men’s omnium behind Meredith.
Mairen Lawson (Marian University) and Rue Tomko (Colorado Mesa University) placed 2ndand 3rd behind Sabo in the women’s individual omnium.
