Team USA Recap: Powless & Simmons Take World Tour Wins; Blevins and Courtney lead the way at US Pro Cup MTB

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (March 18-April 2)

ROAD
Nokere Koerse: Belgium

(March 19) Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) kicked off his road season in Belgium, starting with a 3rd place finish at the 188 kilometer Nokere Koerse. Featuring hills and packed with cobble sectors, Lamperti attacked a tough uphill finish as other cyclists faded to take the podium spot. The 22-year-old is the three-time US Criterium National Champion (2021-23) and is currently in his second year on the pro tour.

Bredene Koksijde Classic: Belgium

(March 21) For the second time in three days, Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) captured a podium spot, this time placing 2nd at the 200 kilometer Bredene Kosijdge Classic. The race came down to a final, three-man sprint, with Lamperti placing 2nd.

Sanremo Women: Italy

(March 22) Chloé Dygert (CANYON/SRAM zondacrypto) placed 6th at the newly revived Milan-San Remo women’s race, a 156 kilometer course that started in Genoa, went along the Ligurian coast and ended in San Remo. Dygert was in an elite group of women at the end chasing Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), who broke away with 2.5 miles to go. Borghini was swallowed up by the group just before the finish line and Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) won. The race, which last ran two decades ago, has been added to the Women’s World Tour calendar as a Monument race.

E3 Saxo Classic: Belgium

(March 28) Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) placed 9th at the 208 kilometer E3 Saxo Classic. The 67th running of the race saw an early crash taking out American Kevin Vermaerke(Team Picnic PostNL) and three others and split the peloton, with Jorgenson in the first group. He ended up in a chase group and finished 2:38 behind eventual winner Mathieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck). In the juniors race earlier in the day, American Ashlin Barry finished second among a stacked field.

Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields: Belgium

(March 30) Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) took 7th overall in a bunch sprint at the women’s Gent-Wevelgem, a 169 kilometer course running from Ypres to Wevelgem. Afterwards she said, “I think my form has been high, but the cards haven’t fallen our way just yet. I’ve been positive and patient, and this feels like a real reward.”

Volta Catalunya: Spain

(March 24-30)Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) earned his first World Tour win, taking 1st on a wind-shortened stage 6 of Volta Catalunya. Four Americans including Simmons, Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech), Sepp Kuss (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), and Will Barta (Movistar Team) competed in the 7-stage race, which ended in Barcelona. Riccitello was the top-placing American, finishing 3rd in the youth category and 11th overall.

Dwars door Vlaanderen: Belgium

(April 2)Continuing the American success over the past few weeks, Neilson Powless (EF Education – Easypost) outsprinted the Team Visma | Lease a Bike trio of Wout van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, and Tiesj Benoot to take his first spring classic win. This is the second year in a row an American has won the historical event, after Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) became the first American male winner in 2024.

US Pro Cup and UCI XCO Junior Series: Fayetteville, Arkansas

(March 19-23) Stop number two in the eight-race USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Series was in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the US Pro Cup at Centennial Park. Despite a strong showing by top Canadians, Americans captured a number of podium spots throughout three days of racing. 

Thursday’s UCI C1 XCO racing included another series victory by Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) in the elite men’s race, followed by Brayden Johnson (Goat Coaching) in 2nd

Kate Courtney (She Sends Racing), Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli), and Madigan Munro (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) took 1st, 3rd, and 5th in the elite women’s race. 

Nicholas Konecny (Lexware Mountain Bike Team) won the U23 men’s race and Colin O’Neil (Gravity Collective) was 5th. Bayli McSpadden (Bear National Team) won the U23 women’s race by more than 2 minutes and was the top-placing American.

Americans Oliver Welcker (Bear National Team), Rowan Nistal (Bear National Team) , River Valdez (Bear National Team), Nikolas Milanovic (Team Cadence Cyclery) and Benjamin Bravman(Bear National Team) swept the top five spots in the junior men’s race.

In the junior women’s race, Ingrid McElroy (Bear National Team) placed 2nd, followed by Estelle Slingsby (Gravity Collective), Landrie McClain (Bear National Team) and Sophia Wellmeier (Bear National Team) in 3rd, 4th, and 5th

Saturday’s UCI HC XCO saw another Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) win in the elite men’s race, followed by Riley Amos (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) in 2nd. Brayden Johnson(Goat Coaching) was 3rd, and Canadians Owen Clark (Pivot Cycles-OTE) and Tyler Orschel (Pan-American Union Racing) placed 4th and 5th.  

Canadian Jennifer Jackson (ORBEA Fox Factory Team) took 1st in the elite women’s XCO race, followed by Kate Courtney (She Sends Racing), Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli), Madigan Munro (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) and Canadian Ella MacPhee (Wilier Vittoria Factory Team) in 2nd-5th place.

Dan English (TRINITY) was the top-placing American in the U23 men’s XCO race, placing 3rd

Lauren Aggeler (Trinity Racing) and Bayli McSpadden (Bear National Team) placed 3rd and 4th in the U23 women’s race, coming in behind Canadians Marin Lowe (Liv Factory Racing) and Nicole Bradbury (Hockley Valley Resort ARMADA) in 1st and 2nd.

In the UCI XCO Junior Series, Rowan Nistal (Bear National Team), Kian Reid (Bear National Team), and River Valdez (Bear National Team) placed 1-3 in a final three-man sprint, coming in ahead of Canadians Nicolas Gauthier (Siboire QuiRoule) and Tristan Taillefer (Siboire QuiRoule) in 4th and 5th.  

Ingrid McElroy (Bear National Team) took 2nd and Estelle Slingsby (Gravity Collective) was 3rd in the junior women’s UCI XCO race behind Canadian Rafaelle Carrier (Pivot Cycles-OTE). 

Next stop in the series is April 11-12, Showdown at Angler’s Ridge, in Danville, Virginia.

BMX RACING
USA Cycling Collegiate BMX National Championships: West Monroe, Louisiana

(March 21-23) – Over two days of racing at Ike Hamilton Arena, Marian University defended their title and walked away with the team omnium win (320 points) at Collegiate BMX Nationals in West Monroe, Louisiana. Lindsey Wilson College came in 2nd (288 points) and Belmont Abbey College was third (264 points).

The collegiate women’s National Championship title was won by Rita Fedewa (Belmont Abbey College). Mekenna Martin (Lindsey Wilson College) earned silver, and Piper Yockelson (Marian University) finished with bronze. 

Cameron Wing (Marian University) earned the collegiate men’s National Championship for the second year in a row. Jordan Callum (Marian University) took silver and Spencer Cole (Lindsey Wilson College) who took silver last year, earned bronze.
