U.S. National Team has a strong showing at Stage One of the Colorado Classic

By: Guillermo Rojas  August 23, 2019

U.S. Olympian Chloe Dygert wins Stage one and defending champion, Katie Hall, put in great position for tomorrow’s hilly Stage Two.

Colorado Springs, Colo. – In their first day racing together as the U.S. National Team, the Collegiate All-star team worked fluidly to place team leader, Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) in the final selection. As the group of 15 riders approached the final QOM, Chloe Dygert (Brownsburg, IN; Sho-Air Twenty20) attacked and soloed for the final 15 miles to take Stage 1 in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Hall finished in the small lead group, placing 9th in the stage, 54 seconds behind Dygert. “My U.S. National Team teammates were so impressive in today's stage and I am honored to be here racing with them,” Hall said after today’s stage. “Congrats to Chloe on a brave and excellently timed move. She really risked it and deserves the win.”

After winning two Gold medals at the Pan American Games in the Individual Time Trial and Team Pursuit, Dygert showed her strength by pulling away from the field. “I had some good legs today. I saw everyone suffering, I looked back and saw there was a little bit of a gap,” Dygert said during the post-race press conference. “I knew that was my only chance. I just attacked and was able to hold it and keep it.”

The U.S. National Team riders: Madeline Bemis (Corona; Calif.; Milligan College), Emma Edwards (Cambridge, Mass.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cara O’Neill (Tucson, Ariz.; University of Arizona) and Samantha Runnels (Austin, Texas; Lindenwood University) covered breaks, filled gaps and rode aggressively for the 54-mile stage. “It was a hard stage, our Collegiate All-stars performed well against some of the best riders in the world,” said Jeff Pierce, Director of Elite Athletics, Road and Track for USA Cycling and Team Director
