Sixteen collegiate athletes, came together April 8–12 to compete in one of the most competitive stage races in the country, the Redlands Bicycle Classic.
The team began the week with a visit to a local Redlands elementary school, where they spoke to more than 350 students about nutrition, bike safety, and balancing academics with athletics.
“Watching the collegiate student-athletes come together to speak with more than 350 elementary students before racing even began set a fun and positive tone that carried through the entire week,” said Vanessa Drummond, USA Cycling Manager of Collegiate Programs.
The five-day stage race opened with a time trial, followed by four days of demanding circuit races and fast paced criteriums.
While the riders typically compete against one another during the collegiate season, the Redlands trip gave them the chance to race as one composite team to gain valuable racing experience and build connections that extended beyond the event. It also gave the student-athletes an opportunity to travel, connect with professional level teams, and form relationships with fellow collegiate athletes they may not have otherwise met.
“I did not know exactly what to expect bringing together athletes who normally race against each other, but I am incredibly proud of how quickly they came together as a team,” said Drummond. “Seeing the way they supported one another throughout the week was rewarding to watch, and I look forward to continuing to grow these opportunities for our collegiate riders.”
Throughout the week, the team remained in the mix, earning sprint points, primes, multiple top 10 finishes, and a fourth place overall finish on Stage 5 from Jette Aelken (Savannah, Ga.; SCAD Savannah) in the Women's Elite.
