Johnson and Stevenson Earn Gold in the Men's and Women’s Elite Pursuit on Day Two of Track Nationals

Sixteen National Titles were awarded on day two of the 2024 USA Cycling Elite & Para-Cycling Track National Championships.

It was a rapid-fire morning on Friday, starting day two with Men’s and Women’s Pursuit Qualifying, Men’s and Women’s Time Trial finals, Men’s and Women’s C1-5 Pursuit finals, and Men’s BVI Pursuit finals.

In the Para C4 Women’s Pursuit, Samantha Bosco (Claremont, Calif.; Bosco Bike Fits) claimed the National Title with a time of 3:58.281, and Shawn Morelli (Leavenworth, Kan.; DNA Cycling) earned silver with a time of 4:02.765. John Terrell captured gold in the Para C4 Men’s Pursuit with a time of 4:53.073. Branden Walton (Livermore, Calif.) and Spencer Seggebruch (Saint Louis, Mo.; Chaney Windows and Doors) claimed their second National Title of the week, taking home gold in the Para BVI Men’s Pursuit.

WOMEN’S 500M TIME TRIAL

The women came to race in the morning session with the top four finishers all clocking times under 36 seconds. Keely Ainslie (Long Beach, Calif.; ASCP Elite) set the bar in Heat 4 with a time of 35.276, which would earn her silver. Emily Hayes (York, S.C.) took to the line in the final heat and powerfully rode to victory, claiming the National Title with a time of 34.912. McKenna McKee (Vancouver, Wash.; Kirk Whiteman Coaching) rounded out the podium with a time of 35.289. McKee’s performance also earned her the Stars and Stripes jersey for the U23 category, bringing her total jersey count to three.

MEN’S KILO TIME TRIAL

Following a flat tire during his initial Heat 5, Wyatt Paul (Seattle, Wash.; Water Line Racing) returned to the track with a vengeance for a powerfully paced race and claimed the National Title with a time of 1:03.643. David Domonoske (Palo Alto, Calif.; Alto Velo) earned silver with a time of 1:04.040, and Corey Jameson (San Diego, Calif.; Water Line Racing) rounded out the podium with bronze. Louis Bonilla (Long Beach, Calif.; Ironfly) earned the National Title for the U23 category.

Moving into the evening, National Titles were on the line for Men’s and Women’s Pursuit, along with Men’s and Women’s Scratch Race.

WOMEN’S PURSUIT

In the Final, Elizabeth Stevenson (Rochester Hills, Mich.; Mad Track Cycling/Lexus Velodrome) and Reagan Pattishall (Breinigsville, Pa.; Edge Cycling) raced for gold, while Kimberly Zubris (Alburtis, Pa.; Bike Works p/b Fred Beans) and Morgan James (Long Beach. Calif.; Velo Club La Grange) battled for bronze. Reaching speeds of over 49 km/h, Stevenson raced to victory with a time of 3:39.617 and claimed the National Title. Pattishall earned silver with a time of 3:41.413. Pattishall’s performance also earned her the Stars and Stripes jersey for the U23 category. Zubris captured bronze with a time of 3:46.302

MEN’S PURSUIT

In the Final, Anders Johnson (Huntsville, Utah; Chaney Windows and Doors) and Merrick Gallagher (Redmond, Wash.; Jerry Baker Juniors) raced for gold, while Max Haggard (San Diego, Calif.; Water Line Racing) and Daniel Zitter (Los Angeles, Calif.) battled for bronze. In a powerfully paced pursuit, reaching speeds of nearly 56 km/hr, Johnson claimed the National Title with a time of 4:17.744. Gallagher earned silver with a time of 4:42.236. Gallagher’s efforts also earned him the Stars and Stripes jersey for the U23 category, his second jersey for the week. Haggard captured bronze with a time of 4:39.105.

WOMEN’S SCRATCH RACE

In the Women’s Scratch Race, twenty-three riders lined up to battle it out for 40 laps and their chance to claim a National Title. The field stayed together, and it came down to a finishing sprint. Chloe Patrick (Carson, Calif.; Cynisca Cycling) pushed it to the line to win gold. This win also earned Patrick the Stars and Stripes jersey for the U23 category, bringing her total jersey count to three. Colleen Gulick (Long Beach, Calif.; Team Skyline - Cadence) earned silver, and Kimberly Zubris (Alburtis, Pa.; Bike Works p/b Fred Beans) rounded out the podium with bronze.

Shawn Morelli (Leavenworth, Kan.; DNA Cycling) claimed her second National Title of the week, taking home gold in the Para C4 Women’s Scratch Race.

MEN’S SCRATCH RACE

Following a brief respite from the Pursuit Finals, twenty riders took the track for the Men’s Scratch Race where spectators witnessed an exhilarating and passionate 60 laps. Anders Johnson (Huntsville, Utah; Chaney Windows and Doors) won his second gold of the day, claiming the National Title. Joining him on the podium would be two of his fellow teammates – Daniel Breuer (Atlanta, Ga.; Chaney Windows and Doors) earned silver and Lance Abshire (Baton Rouge, La.; Chaney Windows and Doors) rounded it out with bronze.

Michael Watkins (Erie, Colo.; Jacomo Racing p/b Minsky's Pizza) earned the National Title for the U23 category.
