Vuelta a España: Spain
(August 26-September 17) – American Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) became the first American in a decade to win a Grand Tour when he took first overall at this year’s Vuelta. It was a hard-fought battle over three weeks for Kuss, 29, whose usual role is to support teammates Jonas Vingegaard and Primož Roglič. The Jumbo-Visma trio took the top three spots, with Kuss holding a 17-second lead at the end over second place.
Kuss captured the leader’s red jersey on Stage 8 and never gave it up. One of the most well-liked cyclists in the pro peloton, Kuss called the victory life-changing. “I think I’ll look back on this experience with a lot of fun memories. It’s still sinking in, I think it’s gonna take quite some time. Now, a big celebration.”

Tour de Gatineau: Québec, Canada
(September 15-17) – Team USA made strong showings with multiple podium spots over three days of racing at Tour de Gatineau in Québec. Day 1 saw Amber Neben and Emily Ehrlich take 2nd and 3rdin the elite women’s time trial. On day 2, Megan Jastrab earned her first UCI win when she outsprinted Alison Jackson to take 1st in the 112 kilometer road race. Skylar Schneider placed 3rd. On day 3, Jastrab and Schneider repeated their results, taking 1st and 3rd in the women’s criterium.

Tour of Luxembourg
(September 20-24) – Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) finished just three seconds behind teammate Marc Hirschi to place 2nd overall at this year’s Tour of Luxembourg. McNulty, 25, also earned 2nd in the young rider’s category and 3rd in points. The U.S. Time Trial National Champion had one of his best seasons this year, placing fourth at the Time Trial World Championships and winning a stage at the Tour of Italy.

Gran Fondo National Championships, Gran Fondo Maryland: Frederick, Maryland
(September 17) – USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships took place at Gran Fondo Maryland, with stars-and-stripes jerseys awarded in more than two dozen age-group categories. Competitors for the national championship covered a 97.6 mile route, while other Gran Fondo cyclists took on 97.6, 27.8 and 61.4-mile courses, including tandem racers.

Olympic MTB Test Event: Paris (Elancourt)
(September 24) – Haley Batten took 4th at the Olympic Mountain Bike Test Event, which saw elite MTB cyclists gather outside Paris to check out the Olympic course they hope to compete on at Paris 2024.

Chequamegon MTB Festival: Hayward to Cable, Wisconsin
(September 16) – The men’s and women’s elite races ended in sprint finishes at the 40th edition of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, with Alexey Vermeulen (Jukebox/Shimano) and Ruth (Winder) Edwards capturing the men’s and women’s titles. The 40-mile race, which follows parts of the American Birkebeiner ski race, was the fifth stop of the Life Time Grand Prix Series.
Edwards outsprinted Alexis Skarda (Santa Cruz Bicycles), while Vermeulen outsprinted a pack of six including Keegan Swenson, who’d won the previous four races in the series.

Marathon MTB National Championships: Auburn, Alabama
(September 23) – Cole Paton (Giant) and Alexis Skarda (Santa Cruz Bicycles) earned the Elite Men’s and Women’s titles at the Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships, held at Chewacla State Park in Auburn. Twenty-seven other national titles were awarded in age-group and Masters categories.
Fox US Open National Downhill Series: Killington, Vermont
(September 21-24) – Dakotah Norton (Intense Factory Racing) took 1st and Asa Vermette(Frameworks) was one second back to take 2nd in the men’s open category at the third and final race in the US Open National Downhill Series.
Aletha Ostgaard (Transition Factory Racing) was 2nd on the women’s side, with Jill Kintner(RedBull/Norco) placing 4th and Matilda Melton (Transition Factory Racing) 5th. Kintner also took 1st in dual slalom.

BMX Racing World Cup Rounds 5 & 6: Sarrians, France
(September 23-24) – Extreme weather conditions cancelled day one of World Cup racing in Sarrians. The race commissaire decided that cross winds and gusts threatened rider safety.
With winds calm on day two, racing took place as scheduled, with Alise Willoughby (Team Toyota/ Daylight Cycle Co) placing 4th in the women’s elite race and Ava Corley (Tangent/ Rift/ Rockstar Racing Team) taking 5th in the women’s U23 race.

USCX Series: Race 1, Virginia’s Blue Ridge Go Cross: Roanoke, Virginia
(September 16-17) – Andrew Strohmeyer (CXD-Trek Bikes) and Raylyn Nuss (Steve Tilford Foundation) both earned bronze to kick off the pro CX season, which opened with Saturday’s C1 Elite events in Roanoke, Virginia.
David Thompson (Finkraft Junior Cycling), Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing) and Miles Mattern (CXD-Trek Bikes) took the top three spots in the men’s junior event, while Alyssa White(Finkraft Junior Cycling), Alyssa Sarkisov (CXD-Trek Bikes) and Lyllie Sonnemann (CXD-Trek Bikes) were top three on the women’s junior side.
Raylyn Nuss captured bronze again at Sunday’s C2 event, which was muddier and slicker than the day before. David Thompson, Miles Mattern and Henry Coote took the top three spots in men’s junior, while Lidia Cusack (CXD-Trek Bikes), Alyssa White and Alyssa Sarkisov were top-three in the women’s junior race.

USCX Series: Race 2, Rochester Cyclocross: Rochester, New York
(September 23-24) – Elite men’s racer Andrew Strohmeyer (CXD-Trek Bikes) podiumed for the second weekend in a row, taking second on day 1 at Rochester, NY. David Thompson (Finkraft Junior Cycling), Miles Mattern (CXD-Trek Bikes) and Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing) took first through 3rd in the men’s junior race. Lidia Cusack (CXD-Trek Bikes) was 1st on the women’s junior side.
Lance Haidet (L39ION of Los Angeles) and Andrew Strohmeyer took 4th and 5th on day two in the men’s elite C2 race, while Lauren Zoerner (Groove Off-Road Racing) and Kaya Musgrave(Cervèlo/Orange Living) placed 4th and 5th on the women’s side. Thompson, Mattern and Cooteagain swept first through third on the men’s junior side, while Alyssa White (Finkraft Junior Cycling) took 2nd and Lidia Cusack 3rd in women’s juniors.
Next up is Charm City in Baltimore, September 30-October 1. The series concludes in Falmouth, Mass at the Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross, October 28-29.

Collegiate Track National Championships: Breinigsville, Pennsylvania
(September 14-17) – Hundreds of collegiate cyclists gathered at Valley Preferred Cycling Center, also known as T-Town, to compete for national track honors over three days of racing. Colorado State University (Club Category) and Marian University (Varsity Category) took home the Team Omnium awards. Stephanie Lawrence (Colorado Springs, Colo., Marian University) won the Women’s Omnium title while Brody McDonald (Escondido, Calif., Milligan University) captured the Men’s Omnium title.
