Colorado Springs, Colo. – 2016 U.S. Olympians and 2020 Olympic Hopefuls Chloe Dygert (Brownsburg, IN; Sho-Air Twenty20) and Jennifer Valente (San Diego; Sho-Air Twenty20) blew up Stage Two and stole the day from the climbers. First Valente took the second intermediate sprint from her fellow U.S. Track teammates Lily Williams (Asheville, N.C.; Hagens Berman/Supermint) and Emma White (Delanson, N.Y.; Rally/UHC), earning a $9,500 Prime, one of the largest in U.S. races. Dygert waited until the final climb, used her track legs to pass the top climbers in the race, taking second on the Bachelor Gulch Queen of the Mountain (QOM) climb and descending to a 28-second victory.
U.S. National Team riders Madeline Bemis (Corona; Calif.; Milligan College), Emma Edwards (Cambridge, Mass.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Samantha Runnels (Austin, Texas; Lindenwood University) battled the peloton during early laps around Avon, Colo. Cara O’Neill (Tucson, Ariz.; University of Arizona) took over on the last circuit and helped launch team leader Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) into selection group up the final climb.
Hall finished 10th in the stage, earning her the Most Inspirational Rider jersey. “The circuits were fast and there was a lot of aggressive racing before we went up the hill,” said Hall after receiving the jersey. “I hope our team’s effort in our red, white and blue jersey, inspire more women to get involved in cycling beyond racing. I started riding my bike to commute, it brought me much joy, which lead me to training and then racing.”
