19 national titles for 500- and 1,000-meter time trials awarded at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center.

TREXLERTOWN, Pa. – Two new American records were set at the 2021 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships during the time trial events. In the Women’s 75-79 500-meter, Bonnie Woodbury (Solana Beach, Calif.) stopped the clock at 45.600, knocking over 10 seconds off the previous record. T-town regular Lisa Nutter (Philadelphia; Team Alliance Environmental) set the Women’s 55-59 500-meter record after she had already won her event, coming within two-tenths of a second on her gold medal ride, she knew she could come back and knock down the record. On her second ride, she took five-tenths off her earlier time, claiming the record as her own in a time of 38.454.

All women tested their times against a lap and a half of the 333.33-meter velodrome at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. Louella Holter (Flagstaff, Ariz.; Hammer Racing Team p/b Thorne) won the Women’s 70-74 event, adding a second jersey to her collection from this trip. Holter’s teammate, Sue Lloyd (Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Hammer Racing Team p/b Thorne), won the Women’s 65-69 race, going three golds for three events so far. With a time of 42.850 seconds, Joanne Trimpi (Pennsburg, Pa.; TTown Masters) took top honors in the Women’s 60-64. Riika Aramo (San Diego; SDBC) earned the starts-and-stripes in the Women’s 50-54. With a new, all-time personal record in the event, Camie Kornly (Englewood, N.J.; BRIHOP/PSIMET) won the Women’s 45-49 race. Jennifer Wagner (Houston, Atomic Momentum), who set the American record for the Women’s 40-44 500 meter Time Trial earlier this summer, earned the national title in the same age group. In the Women’s 35-39, Emily Schelberg (Linthicum, Md.; Big Picture Cycling) made the top step of the podium with her time of 39.777.

On the men’s side, riders 50 and older also compete at the 500-meter distance. Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla.; Guinness Cycling), winner of the Men’s 80-84 Sprint event on Tuesday, added the Men’s 80-84 500 meter national title to his accolades. In the Men’s 75-79, John Petrakis (Sonoma, Calif.; Alto Velo Racing Club) stopped the clock just shy of three seconds ahead of the next competitor to take the gold. Reid Schwartz (Chicago; University of Chicago) won the Men’s 70-74 in a time of 40.008 seconds. Two-tenths of a second shy of the national record, Ray Gildea (Emerald Hills, Calif.; Hammer Racing Team p/b Thorne) won the Men’s 65-69 event. Russell Murphy (Durango, Colo.) narrowly beat out James Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.; WS United/Sprintime) for the Men’s 60-64 time trial national title. Joseph also took home today, as the Men’s 60-64 Sprint tournament originally started on Tuesday concluded with one more ride. Multi-time Masters World and National champion Brian Abers (Colorado Springs, Colo.; BRIHOP Cycling) added another award to his already extensive collection, winning the Men’s 55-59 race. Will Wong (Alexandria, Va.; NCVC UnitedHealthcare) earned his first-ever stars-and-stripes jersey winning the Men’s 50-54 time trial.

Going for 1,000 meters, or three laps of the velodrome, were the Men 35-49. Karl Baumgart (Scottsdale, Ariz.; Velo Track Cycling p/b Gold Medal CBD) stopped the clock with a 1:08.891 to win the Men’s 45-49 event. In the Men’s 40-44, Joshua McDonald (Pleasant Hills, Calif.) took home the gold. Steven Kusy (Alexandria, Va.; District Velocity Racing) added his second gold medal of the meet to his cache after winning the 3,000-meter pursuit on Wednesday.
