Brunner and Bakker win day one of Rochester Cyclocross

C1 Elite Women

The second stop of the 2025 Trek USCX Series delivered a dramatic UCI Elite Women’s C1 race in Rochester, New York. The 50-minute race opened with immediate chaos as Nico Noll and Lauren Zorner went down in the first corner, disrupting the front of the field and creating an early opportunity for the favorites.

Capitalizing on the crash, Manon Bakker surged ahead with Caroline Mani and Sydney McGill in close pursuit through the opening laps. Their move split the race and left the rest of the pack scrambling to recover. Behind the leaders, Maghalie Rochette launched a determined chase, steadily working her way through traffic until she joined Mani and McGill before the halfway point of the race.

At the halfway mark Bakker held a steady 20–30 second advantage over the trio of Rochette, Mani, and McGill. Raelynn Nuss and the recovering Zoerner formed the next chase group but were unable to bridge across as the leaders maintained their tempo.

The final laps confirmed Bakker’s dominance. While Rochette tried to reduce the gap, the Dutch rider extended her lead on the last circuit. McGill and Mani battled behind as the top six riders held their positions. Bakker crossed the line alone for a commanding victory. Rochette secured second with a late surge, while McGill outlasted Mani to claim the final podium spot.

C1 Elite Men

The 60-minute Elite Men’s C1 capped a picture-perfect afternoon at the second stop of the 2025 Trek USCX Series in Rochester, New York. Under clear skies and a mild 70-degree temperature, large crowds lined the course, enjoying early-fall weather, food, and local brews.

A deep field of domestic stars—Kerry Werner, Andrew Strohmeyer, and Eric Brunner among them—took the line. Competitive Edge Racing teammates Cody Scott and Dylan Zakrajsek seized the hole-shot and set a rapid opening pace. Brunner started sluggishly, briefly sitting around tenth, but quickly fought back into the top five by the end of the first lap. True to Rochester tradition, the early circuits featured large-group racing, with a nine-rider lead pack that included Strohmeyer, Brunner, Werner, Scott, Zakrajsek, Tyler Clark, Jules van Kempen, and Calvin Conaway.

The cohesion unraveled quickly. Brunner and Strohmeyer emerged as the strongest pairing, moving clear while former Canadian U23 champion Tyler Clark held a steady solo chase. Behind Clark, Scott, Werner, Zakrajsek, and Tofik Bashir formed the next group but began to splinter under the pace.

With three laps remaining Clark threatened to bridge across, but Brunner launched a sharp attack through the start-finish to maintain separation. Into the final two laps Bruner and Strohmeyer traded short accelerations, doing just enough to keep Clark at bay. Behind them the chasers fractured further as the Competitive Edge duo split the group.

On the bell lap Strohmeyer attacked through Pit 1 but failed to dislodge Brunner. By Pit 2 Brunner held a six-second advantage and carried it to the line for a decisive victory. Strohmeyer claimed second. Clark, after a long solo ride in no-man’s land, secured third.  Cody Scott outsprinted Werner for fourth, with Werner rounding out the top five.
