As a recipient of the USA Cycling HBCU Grant, Bowie State University is proud to launch its cycling program, marking an exciting milestone in its athletic offerings. This grant supports the team’s vision to foster competitive excellence, community engagement, and opportunities for student-athletes.
In its inaugural year, the Bowie State cycling team will begin with three student-athletes, including two experienced veterans and one newcomer. Competing in the Atlantic Collegiate Conference (ACC), the team aims to make history by becoming the first HBCU to qualify for nationals in both road cycling and cyclocross.
Although starting as a club team, Bowie State’s long-term goal is to transition into a competitive varsity program. By addressing the scarcity of U23 cycling teams, Bowie State seeks to serve as a vital bridge to the next level of competitive cycling while providing student-athletes with a top-tier educational experience.
Beyond competitive racing, the program is deeply committed to promoting cycling as a lifestyle for health and fitness within the local community. By partnering with youth organizations, the team aspires to mentor the next generation of cyclists and create a robust pipeline of talent. Recognizing that every child’s path to a professional career differs, Bowie State aims to provide a supportive environment to help them achieve their goals while equipping student-athletes with valuable skills for life beyond cycling.
This new program reflects Bowie State’s dedication to fostering growth, opportunity, and community impact, made possible through the support of the USA Cycling HBCU Grant and its generous donors. The university looks forward to building a legacy that inspires the broader cycling community while empowering its student-athletes to thrive on and off the bike.
