Carson, Calif. – The first day of the 2019 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships saw records in the Women’s 50-54 200-meter Flying Time Trial and the Men’s 80-84 500-meter Standing Time Trial be broken.
Kira Maximovich (San Jose, Calif.; Performance Cycle Coaching) would stop the clock during her sprint qualifications in the morning at 12.052, 2-hundreths of a second faster than the current record for the Women’s 50-54 200-meter. She would come back during the evening session and break her own record set that morning, but completing her 200-meters in 11.990.
For the Men’s 80-84 500-meter time trial Jim Kloss (Huntington Beach, Calif.; South Bay Wheelmen Foundation) would break a five-year-old record with his time of 39.545. Kloss also holds the Men’s 75-79 record in this event, which he set in 2017.
Among the other 17 national titles awarded, three additional sprint titles were awarded in
addition to Maximovich’s: Men’s 60-64 went to Aron Seiken (Santa Fe, N.M.), Men’s 55-59 Frederick Strange (Escondido, Calif.; Velo Track Cycling), and Men’s 35-39 Tomas Munadrain (Clovis, Calif.).
Two individual pursuit titles were claimed. Noah Slack (El Cajon, Calif.) would post a 3:36.388 and claim the title for the Men’s 40-44. For the Women’s 35-39, Brynn Ward (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; Single Malt Velo) would take home the gold.
For the other sprint event of the day, the time trial 5 total titles were awarded. Kloss would be the oldest competitor of the day to take the top step of the podium in this event. He would be joined by Camie Kornely (Fort Lee, N.J.; Blue Ribbon) in the Women’s 45-49, Stephen McLaughry (Portland, Ore.) in the Men’s 45-49, Reid Schwartz (Chicago, Ill.; University of Chicago) in the Men’s 70-74, and Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla) in the Men’s 70-74.
The evening session would see the first mass-start races of the event take place. Steven Worley (Boulder, Colo.; BoulderCentre for Orthopedics) would claim the Men’s 65-69 Points Race title. Tommy Robles (Santa Ana, Calif.; David Phinney Foundation Masters Cycling) would take home the gold for the Men’s 50-54 Scratch Race. Annette Williams (Kenmore, Wash.; Kenmore Velo) would add a Stars-and-Stripes jersey to her collection, having won the Women’s 55-59 Scratch Race at the world championships in the past. Jennifer Wagner (Houston, Texas; Shama Cycling) would take home the Women’s 35-39 Points Race title, Marissa Axell (El Cerrito, Calif.; Revolution Racing p/b JAKROO) is the Women’s 40-44 Points Race champion, and Karen Putrill (Narragansett, R.I.; Stedman’s/Meltsnow Racing) would claim the Women’s 60+ Scratch Race title.
