Road races conclude with crowning of 9 national champions

AUGUSTA, GA.— Racing continued today on Fort Gordon, with the conclusion of the road races. 9 groups took to the course, crowning new champions in each event.

The first wave of the day did three laps of the 24 km course. With racers also battling the grueling heat, most races stayed together for the duration. In the women’s 45-49 Debbie Milne (Greenville, S.C./Papa John’s Racing p/b TREK) outsprinted Ainhoa Perez-Diez (Olney, Md./NSMI Racing) at the line to capture the gold. Kimberly Petit (Tulsa, Okla./ Papa John’s Racing p/b TREK) pushed through to the end to beat out Jan Burger (Valrico, Fla./West Coast Cycling), Tracy Jacobs (Boulder, Colo./Primal Audi Denver Women’s Racing Team), and Kimberly Vaughn (Odessa, Fla./West Coast Cycling) in the women’s 50-54 division. For the women’s 55-59 road race, Kathy Petrillo (Jupiter, Fla.) took the top step of the podium, narrowly beating out Mary Higgins (Ocala, Fla./West Coast Cycling) who took home silver, and Sarah Sauvaye (New York, N.Y./Team Veselka) who took home bronze.

In the women’s 35-39 race, Carolyn Defoore (Austin, Texas/Wolfpack p/b Hyperthreads) took the field sprint, beating out 8 other women for the star-and-stripes. Jeanine Seeger (Boynton Beach, Fla./Monster Media Racing) took the women’s 40-44 title, besting Dori Buckethal (Glenwood, Md./NSMI Racing) and Mary Breed (Arlington, Va./NCVC/UnitedHealthcare). The current women’s 60-64 defending champion, Anne Marie Miller (New York, N.Y./NY Vision Group/Fuoriclasse Racing) kept her title for another year, finishing in a time of 1:26:50. Similarly in the women’s 65-69, Elizabeth Tyrell (Annandale, N.J./Sturdy Girl Cycling Club & Race Team) recaptured her title, taking the win in 1:37:21.

Th last wave of the day did five laps of the course for a total of 120 km. In the men’s 40-44 race, Brian Zimny (Sacramento, Calif./Peet’s Coffee Racing) took a field sprint of sixteen racers to claim the top stop of the podium. Brendan Housler (Memphis, Tenn./DNA Racing) took the men’s 35-39 gold, completing the course in a time of 3:21:29, seconds in front of Donald Brew (Temple Hills, Md./Team Beyer Auto).
