Team USA Recap: Blevins Secures MTB World Cup Overall; McNulty Third Stage Race Victory

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past week (September 30-October 7)

MOUNTAIN BIKE

UCI MTB World Cup, XCC, XCO, DH: Lake Placid, New York

(October 3-5) It was an excellent MTB World Cup weekend overall for the Americans at Lake Placid, and a perfect weekend for Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) who won both the elite men’s XCC and XCO races, and secured the World Cup overall title in both. He’s the first American man to win the Elite XCO Overall since 1991, when John Tomac last claimed the title.

Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity Racing) brought home gold, winning her second World Cup U23 XCO race.

American DH racers won four medals and had a number of top-10 placings: Luca Shaw (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Team) earned silver in the elite men’s race; Aletha Ostgaard (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Team) earned gold and Matilda Melton (Commencal Schwalbe by Les Orres) won silver in the junior women’s final; and Asa Vermette (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) won silver in junior men’s.

Ryan Pinkerton (Mondraker Factory Racing) placed 8th in elite men’s DH; Ryder Lawrenceand Bode Burke (Commencal Schwalbe by Les Orres) were 5th and 6th in junior men’s DH finals. Zanna Logar (Future Frameworks) and Alyana Van Horn were 8th and 9th in junior women’s DH.

Other top-10 placings: Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) placed 4th in elite women’s XCO and Kate Courtney was 7th in elite women’s XCC. Makena Kellermanplaced 8th in U23 women’s XCO and Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity Racing) placed 9thin U23 women’s XCC.

The final MTB World Cup of the season goes to Mont-Saint-Anne, Canada, October 9-12.

ROAD

CRO Race: Croatia

(September 30-October 5) – Just 10 days after winning the Tour of Luxembourg, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won the six-day CRO race, marking his third stage-race victory of the season. Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) placed 5th overall. The race, which McNulty also won in 2024, started in Split and finished in Zagreb and featured steep climbs, cobbles and one stage shortened by high winds.

Il Lombardia Under 23: Italy

(October 4)Cole Kessler (Lidl-Trek Future Racing) placed 6th at the 170-kilometer Il Lombadia U23 race. Kessler, 22, is the current U23 time trial National Champion. This was his best result in Europe so far this season.

CYCLOCROSS

USA Cycling CX National Series, Trek CX Cup (Trek USCX CX Series Event): Waterloo, Wisconsin

(October 3-5) – Stop number five of the Cyclocross National Series for the Trek USCX Serieswas a UCI C1/C2 race weekend at the Trek CX Cup in Waterloo, Wisconsin. 

Day one’s elite men’s C1 racing saw Eric Brunner (Competitive Edge Racing) take his fourth win in the Trek Series this year. Jules Van Kempen (Team Winston Salem-Flow) and elite men’s National Champion Andrew Strohmeyer (CXD Trek Bikes) placed 2nd and 3rd

Mia Aseltine (Competitive Edge Racing) and Raylyn Nuss (Steve Tilford Foundation) placed 3rd and 4th behind Canadian winner Maghalie Rochette (SRAM/Seeker).

Sunday’s C2 racing saw Andrew Strohmeyer (CXD Trek Bikes) place 1st, followed by Eric Brunner (Competitive Edge Racing), Jules Van Kempen (Team Winston Salem-Flow) and Kerry Werner in second, third and fourth place. In a tight competition with Brunner, Strohmeyer’s win on Sunday earned him the overall elite men’s title. 

In elite women’s C2 racing, Raylyn Nuss (Steve Tilford Foundation) placed 4th and Mia Aseltine (Competitive Edge Racing) 5th behind Maghalie Rochette, who claimed the overall elite women’s title with seven out of eight wins in the series. 

The Cyclocross National Series continues with the Englewood Open, October 11-12, in Fall River, Wisconsin.
