Team USA Recap: Cusack and Sarkisov Top-10 at CX Worlds; Sheffield and Dygert Launch Road Season with Success in Australia

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (January 21-February 4)

CYCLOCROSS
UCI CX World Championships: Liévin, France

(January 31-February 2) – Over three days of racing under tough conditions at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in France, Team USA had their best results on day two, with Lidia Cusack(CXD Trek Bikes) placing 5th and Alyssa Sarkisov (CXD Trek Bikes) taking 7th in the junior women’s race. Cusack was in position to medal but a late-race puncture slowed her down.

Katie Clouse (Steve Tilford Foundation Racing) was the top American in the elite women’s race, placing 13th, while Scott Funston (Cervélo/OrangeLiving) wrapped up his CX career on Sunday, coming in 19th in the elite men’s race. 

Day one saw Team USA’s mixed relay squad capture 4th in a tight race. The six-person squad, with one cyclist from every category, missed bronze by three seconds and came in just 8 seconds back of first-placed Great Britain. The team included Scott Funston (Cervélo/OrangeLiving/Elite Men), Aidan Vollmuth (Finkraft Junior Cycling Team/Junior Men), Katie Clouse (Steve Tilford Foundation Racing/Elite Women), Vida Lopez de San Roman (Bear National Team/U23 Women), Lidia Cusack (CXD / Trek Bikes/Junior Women) and Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing/U23 Men).

UCI World Cup: Hoogerheide, Netherlands

(January 26) – The last race in the UCI World Cup series before the World Championships saw three top-10 performances from the youngsters on the American squad. 

Lidia Cusack (CXD Trek Bikes) placed 6th and Alyssa Sarkisov (CXD Trek Bikes) was 9th for the junior women, marking Cusack’s fifth top-10 finish in six UCI World Cup races this season. The reigning junior women’s CX national champion made history by finishing fifth overall in the UCI World Cup rankings.

Sarkisov, who won silver in the CX National Championships, had three top-10 finishes in her four World Cup junior races, and ranked 14th overall on the season. 

U23 National Champion Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing) placed 10th in the U23 men’s race for his best World Cup showing of the season.

ROAD
Santos Tour Down Under: Australia

(January 21-26)Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) kicked off his road race season with a 7thplace on GC at the Santos Tour Down Under. The race is the first event on the UCI Men’s WorldTour, with six stages taking place in and around Adelaide, Australia. 

Sheffield finished 4th overall at the race back in 2023, and was the sole American competing this year.

Schwalbe Women’s One Day Classic: Australia

(January 26)Chloé Dygert (CANYON/SRAM/zondacrypto) came in 4th overall at the Schwalbe One Day Classic, a 90 kilometer circuit race in Adelaide, Australia. The 20-lap race, held on a 4.5 kilometer course, came down to a final sprint among the top women. The course also served as the 6thand final stage of the men’s Tour Down Under, which started after the women crossed the line.

Surf Coast Classic, Elite Women’s Race: Australia

(January 29)Chloé Dygert (CANYON/SRAM/zondacrypto) continued her successful start of the season in Australia, this time taking 2nd place in a sprint finish at the Surf Coast Classic. 

It was the first year of the 118 kilometer event for women, which goes from Lorne to Torquay. “I’m really happy to pull off another podium result for the team and for the girls,” said Dygert afterwards. “They worked really hard for me today.”

Women’s World Tour, Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race: Australia

(February 1)Chloé Dygert (CANYON/SRAM/zondacrypto) placed 4th and Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) was 6th at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The 141 kilometer race ended in a small group sprint, with Dygert and Edwards getting the same time (3:59:43) as the winner, New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston.

It was Dygert’s fourth top-4 finish in the past month since beginning the pro road season in Australia. Next up on the Women’s World Tour: the UAE Tour, on Feb. 6.

Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race: Australia

(February 2) –  A day after the women’s race, the pro men took on the 187 kilometer men’s course, with American Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) taking 7th overall in a small group sprint behind solo winner Mauro Schmid. 

It was an especially hot race for the men, with temperatures hitting a brutal 104 degrees. This was the final UCI men’s race in Australia for the season; next up is the UAE Tour, starting Feb. 17.
