Japan Cup Road Race and Criterium: Utsunomiya, Japan
(October 17-18) – Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) wrapped up his road season with a decisive win at the 144-kilometer Japan Cup road race. The road national champion beat Ireland’s Ben Healy in a two-man sprint for the finish, completing the race in 3:33:02, more than a minute ahead of the peloton.
“When you take the start and Ben is here, I think everyone knew we were the two strongest in the race,” Simmons said afterwards. “Luckily the course is selective enough that we can make the difference and have a fair battle between us. I was quite confident in my sprint, so I just knew I had to make it over the climb the last time.”
The day before was the 34-kilometer Japan Cup Criterium, won by Norway’s Jesper Stiansen. Quinn’s brother Colby Simmons (EF Education-EasyPost) was the top-placing American, in 10th place.
