Team USA Recap: Lidia Cusack Captures First CX World Cup Win; Peter Moore wins Scratch Race at Track Champions League

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (November 19-December 3)

CYCLOCROSS
North Carolina Grand Prix: Hendersonville, North Carolina

(November 23-24) – The last stop of the 11-race USA Cycling Cyclocross National Series came to Hendersonville for a full weekend of C2 racing, a final domestic tune-up for the upcoming CX National Championships on December 12-15.

Eric Brunner (Competitive Edge Racing) made it a sweep, winning the elite men’s race both days. It was a decisive victory on day one, with Brunner coming in almost a minute ahead of 2nd-placed Kerry Werner, Jr. (Groove Off Road Racing). Day 2 was a much tighter battle, with Brunner edging out Werner by 2 seconds and 3rd-placed Scott Funston (Cervélo/Orange Living) by 3 seconds.  

Eighteen-year-old Vida Lopez de San Roman (Milligan University) placed 1st both days in the elite women’s race, with Lizzy Gunsalus (Marian University) taking 3rd on day one, and Kaya Musgrave(Cervélo/Orange Living) placing 3rd on day 2. French cyclist Caroline Mani took 2nd both days.

Ethan Brown (Midwest Devo) and Porter Melvin (Team Stampede) went 1-2 on both days of the junior men’s race, though Brown won by 30 seconds on day one and the two virtually tied on day 2. The Czech Republic’s Tomás Meier placed 3rd both days. 

Ada Watson (CXD Trek Bikes) won on day 1 of junior women’s racing, followed by 2nd-placed Bridget Wilson (JAM/NCC) and Hadley Molnar (Blue Ridge Cross). Sunday’s racing saw Bridget Wilson, Hadley Molnar and Nicole Clamann (Blue Ridge Cross) go 1-3.

UCI CX World Cup: Dublin, Ireland

(December 1) –  USA racers descended on Dublin for round 2 of the UCI CX World Cup series, getting more race time in before the CX National Championships on Dec. 12-15 in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Lidia Cusack (CXD Trek Bikes) won the junior women’s race, marking her first UCI World Cup win. The 17-year-old is the reigning junior time trial National Champion. Aidan Vollmuth (Finkraft Junior Cycling Team) placed 6th in the junior men’s race. Next up in the series: December 8 in Sardinia.

UCI Masters Cyclocross World Championships: Hamburg, Germany

(November 29-December 1) – Hundreds of cyclocross racers from around the globe came to Hamburg, Germany to vie for Masters World Championship titles over three days of racing.

Lillian Pfluke (RSC Prum, 1st place, Women 65-69); Tracy Lea (TEAM Fuji, 2nd place, Women 70-74); Corey Cisek Coogan (Triple C Racing, 9th place, Women 45-49).

Paul Curley (American Lung Association, 4th place, Men 70-74), Bob Fetherston (BikeX p/b Hyperthreads, 5th place, Men 70-74); Robert Ogren (NorthStar Development, 5th place, Men 75-79); David Hildebrand (Competitive Edge Racing, 7th place, Men 55-59); Justin Morgan (Fieldriders, 7th place, Men 50-54).

TRACK
UCI Track Champions League, Round 1: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France

(November 23) – Season four of the UCI Track Champions League kicked off at the French National Velodrome, site of the Paris 2024 Olympic track cycling competition. The League has five rounds of racing and is divided into men’s and women’s Sprint (Sprint and Keirin) and Endurance (Elimination and Scratch) categories, with up to 18 riders in each category.

Representing the USA are Grant Koontz (Star Track Cycling) and first-timer Peter Moore (Chaney Windows and Doors), who are both participating in the men’s Endurance series. Koontz placed 8thoverall in round 1 and Moore placed 16th.

UCI Track Champions League, Rounds 2-3: Apeldoorn, Netherlands

(November 29) –  Track Champions League debutant Peter Moore (Chaney Windows and Doors) won round 3’s Scratch race on Saturday night in Apeldoorn, his first win of the series. Moore previously placed 4th in the Men’s Elite Points race at October’s UCI Track World Championships.

Unfortunately, Grant Koontz (Star Track Cycling) did not start Round 3 after sustaining a wrist injury in a crash that brought down half the field in the men’s Elimination race the previous evening. In Round 2, Moore and Koontz placed 15th and 16th overall. 

Next up on December 6-7 are the final two rounds, at London’s Lee Valley VeloPark. The park hosted track events at the 2012 London Olympics as well as the last three years of the Track Champions League final rounds.
