Team USA Recap: Lopez de San Roman Captures First U23 XCO Gold; McNulty Top-5 finish at VCV

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (February 4-19)

MOUNTAIN BIKE
Internacionales Chelva and UCI XCO Junior Series: Chelva, Spain

(February 15-16) Team USA’s MTB squad kicked off their season in southeastern Spain and came away with two podium spots and two top-10 finishes. 

Kelsey Urban (KMC Ridley MTB Racing Team) placed 2nd and Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) was 5th in the elite women’s XCO race. Urban is the reigning elite women’s XCO and XCC national champion. 

Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity Racing) captured gold in the U23 women’s XCO race and Sofia Waite placed 9th. Lopez de San Roman is the reigning CX national champion and junior women’s XCO national champion.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana: Spain

(February 5-9)Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) kicked off his road racing season with a 5th-place finish at the 2025 VCV. The five-stage race, set in southeastern Spain, starts with a team time trial in Orihuela and ends in Valencia. McNulty had top-10 finishes in three out of the five stages, and was the top-placing American of the 11 USA cyclists competing.

Vuelta CV Feminas: Spain

(February 9) Chloe Patrick (Cynisca Cycling) placed 7th at the one-day Vuelta CV Feminas, a 103 kilometer UCI race that goes from Alfafar to Valencia. The 20-year-old placed 2nd last year in the U23 time trial national championships.

UAE Tour: UAE

(February 17-23) –  Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech) placed 9th on the UAE Tour’s mountainous stage 3, which featured a finishing climb up the country’s highest peak. The 180 kilometer stage was basically flat until the last 21 kilometers, which averages a 6 percent grade. 

Riccitello, 22, came in with a small group just 4 seconds behind the leaders, including stage winner Tadej Pogacar. American Will Barta (Movistar) is also competing at the tour, which finishes with a similar stage on Sunday when the riders climb the country’s second-highest peak, Jebel Hafeet.
