Team USA Recap: Lopez de San Roman, Sarkisov, and Cusack Finish Top-10 at CX Worlds

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (January 20-February 3)

CYCLOCROSS
UCI Cyclocross World Championships: Hulst, Netherlands

(January 30-February 1) – Twenty-three athletes represented the USA at this year’s UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Hulst, Netherlands. 

The U23 Women were the largest Team USA contingent, with seven Americans at the start line and three finishing in the top-10. Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity Racing) sprinted to the line for 6th, followed by Alyssa Sarkisov (CXD/Trek Bikes) in 7th and Lidia Cusack(CXD/Trek Bikes) in 8th

Henry Coote (Trinity Racing) placed 13th in the U23 men’s race, missing out on a top-10 spot by seconds in a final sprint. 

Ethan Brown (Midwest NXT) grabbed a top-20 spot in a packed junior men’s race, finishing 16th among the 60-plus starters, while Kira Mullins (Bear National CX) placed 18th in the junior women’s race. 

Pan Am and National Champion Lizzy Gunsalus (CCB Racing p/b Levine Law Group) battled it out in the elite women’s race at her first world championships, placing 20th.

UCI World Cup: Hoogerheide, Netherland

(January 25)Henry Coote (Trinity Racing) was the top-placing American in Hoogerheide, taking 9th in another tight U23 men’s race. It was the first top-10 spot in European CX racing this season for the men’s U23 national champion.  

Lidia Cusack (CXD Trek Bikes) earned her fourth top-20 spot in World Cup CX, placing 18thin the elite women’s race.

AlUla Tour: Saudi Arabia

(January 27-31)Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) kicked off his road season with an 11th place finish at the five-stage AlUla Tour. Vermaerke finished the race just one second away from a top-10 spot.
