Team USA Recap: Ruth Edwards Wins Pan Am Time Trial; Kate Courtney Silver at Pan Am MTB

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (April 15-29)

ROAD

Brabantse Pijl: Belgium

(April 18) Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) placed 7th at Brabantse Pijl, coming in 27 seconds behind the winner, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step). Powless was the top-placing American at the 162 kilometer Flanders Classic.

Tour of the Alps: Italy

(April 21-25) Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech) placed 9th at Tour of the Alps, a five-stage race that traverses northern Italy and southern Austria. It was the 48th edition of the race, which covered 739 kilometers and featured more than 14,000 meters of climbing. The 23-year-old also placed 2nd in the Youth category.

Tour of the Gila: Arizona

(April 23-27) Kieran Haug (Project Echelon Racing) placed 1st overall at the five-stage Tour of the Gila, coming in 22 seconds ahead of 2nd place Eric Brunner (Competitive Edge Racing). Brunner won the stage 1 time trial and stage 4’s road race. Owen Wright (Canel’s-Java) and Caleb Classen (Project Echelon Racing) rounded out the top American placings, coming in 4th and 5th

On the women’s side, Lauren Stephens (Aegis Cycling Mixed Team) won Tour of the Gila for the second year in a row, coming in ahead of Canadian Sidney Swierenga (TaG Cycling) and teammate Emma Langley (Aegis Cycling Mixed Team), who placed 3rd. Stephens and Langley also went 1-2 in the Mountain category, and Stephens was 1st in the Sprint category.

Pan American Continental Championships: Punta del Este, Argentina

(April 23-26) Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) was 1st and Emily Ehrlich (Virginia's Blue Ridge TWENTY28) came in 10 seconds later to capture 2nd in women’s individual time trial at the Pan Am Continental Championships in Argentina.

Skylar Schneider (Team SD Worx-Protime) took 2nd in the 99 kilometer women’s road race, coming in behind winner Juliana Londono (Colombia). Cyclists from more than 20 nations took part in the championships.

Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Belgium

(April 27) Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) was the top-placing American at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the 252 kilometer Belgian classic that took just over six hours to complete. Powless placed 10th behind the solo winner, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) who broke away on one of the last 11 climbs. It was Powless’s third top-10 placing this month during the Spring classics season after his historic win at Dwars door Vlaanderen.

Pan American Continental Championships: Finca la Lucha, Costa Rica 

(April 23-26) Team USA captured a number of podium spots at the Pan Am MTB Continental Championships, kicking things off with silver in the six-lap Team Relay. Kate Courtney (She Sends Racing), Makena Kellerman (Bear National Team), Sophia Wellmeier (Bear National Team), River Valdez (Bear National Team), Jack Spranger (Bear National Team) and Henry Coote (Trinity Racing) came in 37 seconds behind first-place Team Canada.

Kate Courtney placed 2nd in both elite women’s XCC and XCO. In the U23 women’s races, Makena Kellerman finished 3rd and Bailey Cioppa (Bear National Team) 5th. For the U23 men, Ivan Sippy(Team Segment 28) placed 3rd and Henry Coote (Trinity Racing) took 5th.

Benjamin Bravman (Bear National Team) won the junior men’s XCO and River Valdez placed 4th. Sophia Wellmeier placed 2nd in junior women’s XCO. Jack Spranger took 7th in elite men’s XCC.
