Team USA Recap: Simmons Animates Tour de France; Blevins, Ostgaard, and Vermette Repeat UCI World Cup Podiums; Endurance Mountain Bike Nationals Crowns New Champions

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (July 8-22)

ROAD

Tour de France: France

(July 5-27) – With 16 stages down and five to go, Sepp Kuss (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) is currently the top American on GC at this year’s Tour de France, sitting in 15th place behind the overall leader, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG). Kuss’s teammate Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who spent nearly two weeks in the top-10, dropped a few spots and sits in 20th place.

The other Americans who started the Tour remain in the race: Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost); Road Race National Champion Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), who scored two top-10 finishes so far at the Tour; and first-timer Will Barta (Movistar Team), whose best result was 6th on the mountainous sixth stage. The Tour ends on July 27 in Paris.

La Périgord Ladies: France

(July 19)Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) scored two top-five placings over two days of women’s pro road racing in France. On day one she placed 4th at La Périgord Ladies, a 120 kilometer hilly road race from Lac de Rouffiac to Boulazac-Isle-Manoire. American Heidi Franz (Cynisca Cyling) was 9th. On the final finishing circuit of 3.5 laps on a 6km loop, Williams was in a small chase group that came in two minutes after the solo winner, Spaniard Paula Blasi (UAE Team ADQ).

La Picto-Charentaise: France

(July 20) – On the second consecutive day of women’s road racing in France, Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) scored another top-five finish, placing 5th at La Picto-Charentaise. The 135 kilometer race started in Poitiers and finished with a three-lap circuit in Châtellerault.

Williams was part of a small chase group that came in 32 seconds behind solo winner Dominika Wlodarczyk (UAE Team ADQ). In the past month, Williams has competed in 8 one-day women’s races in Europe and has finished top-10 in six of them.

GP CHW Beveren: Belgium

(July 13)Alexis Magner (Cynisca Cycling) placed 5th at the 140 kilometer UCI Belgian road race, which started and ended in Beveren. Cynisca is part of USA Cycling’s women’s development program, designed to identify and nurture talented women riders with opportunities to race globally.

USA Cycling Criterium National Series and American Criterium Cup, Bailey & Glasser Twilight Crit: Boise, Idaho

(July 19)Sofia Arreola (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28) won the women’s pro race and Luke Fetzer (Team Cadence Cyclery p/b Encore Wire) won the men’s pro race at this year’s Bailey & Glasser Boise Twilight Criterium. It was the 38th consecutive running of the race, which was part of the USA Cycling Criterium National Series in partnership with the American Criterium Cup.

Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28) was 2nd and Makayla MacPherson(CCB p/b Levine Law Group) was 3rd in the elite women’s race. In the elite men’s race, Ama Nsekwas 2nd and Maurice Ballerstedt (Baller) was 3rd

MOUNTAIN BIKE
UCI MTB World Cup (XCC, XCO, DH): Pal Arinsal, Andorra 

(July 9-13) – Team USA came away with three podium spots and five top-10 placings overall at Pal Arinsal, Andorra, with strong performances again from junior DH racers. 

With extreme weather in the forecast, junior qualifying results were taken as the final results. Aletha Ostgaard (Canyon Collective Factory Team) won the junior women’s DH for the second weekend in a row, while Asa Vermette (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) placed 2nd in the junior men’s final for his second consecutive silver. In the elite men’s DH final, Dakotah Norton (Mondraker Factory Racing) placed 10th. 

Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) placed 2nd at the line in men’s elite XCC, ending his historic five-win streak that began this season. Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity) was 5th in U23 women’s XCO. Brayden Johnson was 7th in U23 men’s XCC.

USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Bike National Championships: Roanoke, VA

(July 14-20) Hundreds of American age group and elite/pro cyclists came to Roanoke, Virginia, for a week of competition, vying for Stars and Stripes jerseys in Cross Country Marathon, Short Track, and Cross Country Olympic mountain bike racing. 

Day one saw Cole Paton (Giant) and Hannah Otto (SCOTT) earn the elite men’s and women’s Marathon Cross Country National Championship titles, respectively.

In elite short track racing, Bjorn Riley (Scott-SRAM MTB Racing) crossed the line 5 seconds ahead of Riley Amos (Trek Factory Racing - Pirelli) to defend his XCC national title, while Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing) outsprinted Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing - Pirelli) for the women’s title. Robbie Day (Bear National Team) took 3rd in the men’s race while Kelsey Urban(KMC Ridley) was 3rd across the line for the women. 

Nicholas Konecny (Lexware Mountain Bike Team) took 1st in U23 men’s, edging out Jack Spranger (Bear National Team) at the line. Ivan Sippy (Segment 28) was 3rd. Bailey Cioppa (Bear National Team) took the U23 women’s crown, followed by Greta Kilburn (Bicycle Express Racing) and Makenna Kellerman (Bear National Team) in 2nd and 3rd.

Riley Amos (Trek Factory Racing - Pirelli) edged defending national champion Bjorn Riley (Scott-SRAM MTB Racing) by 10 seconds for the elite men’s XCO championship. Marathon Cross Country national champion Cole Paton (Giant) was 3rd

Kelsey Urban (KMC Ridley) outsprinted women’s short track champion Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing) for the elite women’s XCO championship, with Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing - Pirelli) coming in 3rd.

In the U23 men’s race, Dan English (TRINITY Racing) outsprinted 2nd place Ivan Sippy (Segment 28) to take the title by one second, followed by Austin Beard (Segment 28) in 3rd. Makena Kellerman (Bear National Team) came across the line alone for the U23 women’s title, followed by teammate Bailey Cioppa (Bear National Team) in 2nd and Greta Kilburn (Bicycle Express Racing) in 3rd
