Team USA Recap: Wood Takes Bronze in BMX Racing World Cup; Gold for Shaw & Bronze for Ostgaard in Downhill MTB World Cup; Kuss Earns Grand Tour Stage Trilogy
(May 28-31) – Luca Shaw (Canyon DH Racing) won the elite men’s DH in Loudenvielle, marking the 29-year-old’s first-ever Elite World Cup win. Ryan Pinkerton (Mondraker Factory Racing DH) was 10th.
Shaw’s victory made it two for two for USA men in DH World Cup racing so far this year, with Asa Vermette (Frameworks Racing) winning round one in South Korea.
Anna Newkirk (Frameworks Racing/TRP) placed 9th in the elite women’s DH final.
Althea Ostgaard (Canyon DH Racing) earned bronze in the junior women’s DH and Alex Mallen (Outlaw Intense Racing) placed 10th in the junior men’s race.
Next up on the World Cup downhill calendar is Saalfelden-Leogang, Austria, June 11-14. There are nine stops around the globe on the DH calendar, with the final (and only US-based) competition taking place in Lake Placid, NY, October 2-4.

(June 6-7) – After seven stages of racing over two days at Idaho’s Silver Mountain Resort, Colton Peterson retained his title in the pro/open men’s race, and Porsha Murdock(Specialized/TRP/Fox) earned the pro/open women’s title at this year’s Enduro MTB National Championships. Eighteen national titles were awarded over the weekend, and racers from Juniors 13-14 through Masters 60+ competed.
Peterson won three of seven stages. Marco Osborne placed 2nd and Myles Morgan was 3rd.
Murdock won six of seven stages. Chloe Bear placed 2nd and Taylor Ostgaard(Canyon/TLD) was 3rd.
(June 6-7) – Stop number six in the USA Cycling Cross-Country MTB National Series and round four of the USXC Open Series came to the Pacific Northwest at US Pro Cup Washougal.
Carson Beard (Segment 28) swept the elite men’s category. The 22-year-old from Vermont won XCC on day one and XCO on day two. Preston Johnson (Rouleur National Team), Jake Johansen (Dark Sky Devo), Yoann Perrodin (Team Bear Devo) and Paul Vrouwenvelder (Hart Accel) placed 2nd-5th in XCC. On day two, Perrodin, Johnson, Sandy Floren and Aran Connolly (Team Booger) placed 2nd-5th in elite men’s XCO.
Canadian Eleanor Winchell (Charge Racing) also scored a double win, taking elite women’s XCC and XCO. On day one, Americans Emma Wilcox (The Gravity Academy), Emma Clark (Team Bear Devo), Abigail Dixon (WE Development) and Zoe Peterson (KUHL Cycling) placed 2nd-5th. Day two’s XCO mixed things up a bit, with Wilcox, Peterson, Dixon, and Hannah Wray (The Gravity Academy) placing 2nd-5th.
Miles Perry (Rouleur Devo/Giant) won the junior men’s XCO race, followed by Rylan Zacharek (Bear Devo), Edyn Teitge (Wild Rockies), Jude Marsden (Team SOHO) and Owen Hawkes (Rouleur Devo/Giant) in 2nd-5th.
Junior women’s CX national champion Kira Mullins (Bear National) won the junior women’s XCO race. Siri Krum (Donovan Racing), Scout Harrington (Team Booger), Emma Daly(Team Bear Devo) and Payette Spangenberg (Wild Rockies Racing) placed 2nd-5th.
The Soldier Hollow (Soho) Bike Fest and UCI XCO Junior Series, June 26-28 in Midway, Utah, wraps up the Cross-Country MTB National Series.

(June 6) – Rounds one and two of BMX Racing World Cup action saw a bronze medal and four other top-10 placings over two days of racing for Team USA in France.
Cameron Wood (Mongoose) placed 4th in elite men’s finals on day one, taking a top spot in a field of 87 competitors. In U23 racing, national champion Sean Day (Cycle Therapy Racing) placed 7th in the finals. Women’s national champion Payton Ridenour(Chase/BRGStore.com/Tioga) reached the elite women’s semi-finals to place 10th.
Cameron Wood earned bronze in day two’s elite men’s finals. Junior men’s national champion Tommy Bruney (Fulltilt/Rift) also made it to the finals, placing 7th in the U23 men’s race from a field that started with more than 160 riders.
Next up are rounds 3 and 4 in Papendal, Netherlands, June 13-14.

(June 1-5) – Riley Sheehan (NSN Cycling) placed 2nd overall at the Tour de Wallonie in Belgium. Sheehan, 25, went into the final stage in first and nearly scored the biggest win of his career. But his three second lead and a crash in the final sprint left him two seconds behind the overall winner, New Zealand’s Ben Oliver.
“The guys rode amazingly. We went for the bonus seconds, we got them, and then they set me up perfectly for the finish and what could have been a great final sprint. It came pretty close to being a great day,” he said afterward.

(May 8-31) – Sepp Kuss (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) won stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia and was the top-placing American at the Grand Tour, coming in 13th overall after three weeks of racing. With the stage win, Kuss became just the second American to win a stage at the Giro, Tour de France, and Vuelta a Espana, joining Tyler Farrar, who achieved all three in 2011. Kuss rode in support of his teammate and first-time Giro victor, Jonas Vingegaard.

(May 30-June 7) – Over nine days of racing at the women’s Giro d’Italia, Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) placed top-10 in three stages. Three other Americans competed: Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly), Caroline Wreszin (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber 93), and Alexis Magner (EF Education-Oatly).

(June 4-7) – The U23 Men’s program kicked off their European race week at Austria’s Oberösterreich Rundfahrt, a four-stage race from Linz to Aigen-Schlägl. Six Americans competed: Gavin Sherry, Marcis Shelton, Kai Lokey, Beckam Drake, Jack Diemar, and Julien Ruhe.
Sherry placed 2nd and Shelton 7th on stage 1, with Sherry missing the victory by five seconds.
Final results after four days of racing saw two Americans in the top-15: Sherry placed 2nd, coming in 9 seconds behind the winner, Henrique Bravo of Brazil. Shelton placed 15th.

(June 5) – Three days of criterium racing in Tulsa for age-group and pro cyclists kicked off round one of the four-race American Criterium Cup series.
Day one of Saint Francis Tulsa Tough saw Dario Rapps (DCC) win the pro men’s race (McNellie’s Group Blue Dome Criterium) and Skylar Schneider (L39ION of Los Angeles) take the pro women’s victory.
Teammates Bryan Gomez (Foundation Cycling New York) and Jordan Parra placed 2ndand 3rd behind Rapps. Criterium national champion Kendall Ryan (Caldera Medical/Aurea Racing) and Aline Seitz (HigherDOSE/Renova) placed 2nd and 3rd in the elite women’s race.
Dario Rapps (DCC) and Kendall Ryan (Caldera Medical/Aurea Racing) won day two’s FC Tulsa Arts District Criterium.
Bryan Gomez (Foundation Cycling New York) and Michael Garrison (SpeedStudio) placed 2nd and 3rd in the elite men’s race. Skylar Schneider (L39ION of Los Angeles) and Paola Munoz (Fearless Femme p/b The Beasley Firm) placed 2nd and 3rd for the elite women.
Matthew Wilson (Scott Sports USA) and Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28) earned day three’s wins at McElroy River Parks Criterium.
Riley Wrightsman (Chaney Windows and Doors/Big Shark p/b Pastaria) and Bryan Gomez(Foundation Cycling New York) placed 2nd and 3rd behind Wilson. Tess Edwards (Caldera Medical/Aurea Racing) and Andrea Cyr (HigherDOSE/Renova) placed 2nd and 3rd.
With three second-place finishes over three days, Bryan Gomez sits at the top of the pro men’s Omnium by one point over Dario Rapps. Michael Garrison is 3rd. Skylar Schneiderleads the pro women’s Omnium by one point over Kendall Ryan. Marlies Mejias Garcia is 3rd.
Chicago Grit is up next, with 10 days of racing starting July 17. The ACC pro race at Fulton Market is July 26.

(May 29-31) – An omnium format that included four stages of racing over three days -- two road races, a criterium and time trial – took place in Commerce, Lula, and Demorest, Georgia at the end of May. The race also served as a stop in USA Cycling’s Junior Road National Series.
Derick Chavaria won the Pro 1-3 men’s Omnium title. Joshua Walker was 2nd and Clark LaVoie placed 3rd.
Bristol Albright won the women’s Omnium title, with Bella Kroutil and Emma Frost in 2ndand 3rd.
Diego Duran and Vivienna Brainard-Tucker captured the junior elite men’s and women’s Omnium titles. Martin Gill was 2nd and Seamus Havron was 3rd behind Duran.
Next up in the series is Tour of America’s Dairyland, June 18-28.

(May 29-30) – Mads Wurtz Schmidt (Specialized Off-Road) won the elite men’s race and Sofia Gomez Villafañe (Specialized Off-Road) won the elite women’s race at this year’s ultra-challenging, ultra muddy UNBOUND Gravel.
Schmidt crossed the line of the 206.9 mile course in 9:14:51. Matthew Beers (Specialized Off-Road) was 2nd (9:19:54) and Tobias Kongstad (PAS Racing) was 3rd (9:24:43).Brendan Johnston placed 4th and Keegan Swenson (Specialized Off-Road) was 5th.
Villafañe defended her title in a five-up sprint finish, coming in at 10:31:37. Geerike Schreurs (Specialized Off-Road), Cecily Decker (PAS Racing) and Paige Onweller (Trek Driftless) placed 2nd-4th, in 10:31:38, and Rosa Klöser (Canyon/SRAM/MAAP) was 5th, in 10:31:39.
Juniors took on the 50-mile course in stop number 4 of USA Cycling’s Junior Gravel National Series.
Greyson Wimberley won the junior men’s 15-16 race, followed by Aidan Cameron in 2ndand Miles Crockett in 3rd.
Jake Mercado won the junior men’s 17-18 race, followed by Trenton Nielsen in 2nd and Ren Huston in 3rd.
Sarah Black won the junior women’s 15-16 race. Juniper Allen was 2nd and Bailey Brownplaced 3rd.
Heidi Hansen won the junior women’s 17-18 race, followed by Eliana Kostadinov in 2ndand Lily Lingard in 3rd.

(June 6) – Rothrock GRIT Gravel Grinder served as stop 5 in the USA Cycling Junior Gravel National Series. Junior men and women (15-16) tackled a 45-mile course with 4,269 feet of elevation, and 17-18 took on a 65-mile course, with 6,226 feet of climbing. Other cyclists rode 25, 45, and 65 mile-courses in Rothrock State Forest.
Benjamin Wright won the 65-mile pro men’s race (3:33:29), followed by Jeffrey Watts and Scott Gray in 2nd and 3rd. Emily Stapleton won the 65-mile pro women’s race in 4:09:58. Paige Anderson and Kristina Mountz placed 2nd and 3rd.
Everett Radock won the 65-mile 17-18 junior men’s race in 3:46:59, followed by Brendan Monahan and Evan Singer in 2nd and 3rd.
Kate Elwell won the 17-18 junior women’s race (4:15:12). Aleah Heiland was 2nd.
Chris Schwarz won the 15-16 junior men’s race (2:50:33). Hudson Phillips was 2nd and Oscar Pearlman 3rd. Stella Loverich won the junior women’s race (3:01:16), followed by Tamara Warner and Kaela Faith in 2nd and 3rd.
