The 2025 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships p/b The Meteor kicked off on Wednesday morning at Centennial Park in Fayetteville, Ark. A technical course, high winds, and dry conditions made for fast and challenging racing on day one.
Twenty-nine riders toed the line to battle for the Stars and Stripes jersey. From the start, the racing was fast and furious. By the end of lap one, the field splintered, and a lead group of five was established. Christopher Peck (Los Gatos, Calif.; LGBRC p/b Ben Dodge Realtor) and David Hildebrand (Ellington, Conn.; Competitive Edge Racing) pushed the pace to gain a small advantage over the hard-chasing group. Peck and Hildebrand continued to gain time, sticking close together until the last lap, where Peck was able to create a 13-second gap and claim the national title. Hildebrand rode in for silver, with Matt Davies (Boulder, Colo.; Donovan Racing) close behind, earning bronze.

In the largest field of the day, Paul Richard (Amesbury, Mass.; CCNS) took the top step in the Men’s 60-64 race, securing the win and earning a new Stars and Stripes jersey after finishing 35 seconds ahead of Victor Sheldon (Vista, Calif.; Specialized/Hammer/Baghouse). Ralf Warmuth (Piscataway, N.J.) rode in for a third-place finish.

Harry Hamilton (Madison, N.J.; PROthirteen Cycling Coaching) took the win for the Men’s 65-69, holding on to the national title for another year. Barry Makarewicz (Salt Lake City, Utah; Kuhl Cycling Team) secured silver, finishing 26 seconds after Hamilton. Curtis Southern (Frederick, Md.; National Capital Velo Club) matched his performance from last year and rounded out the podium with bronze.

Thirty-nine athletes competed in the Masters Men 70+ category, with one of the oldest riders being 92. After aging up this year, David Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.; ERRACE.org/Competitive Edge Racing/Tavros Cycling/Velo Legitimo) finished first in the Men’s 70-74 race, displaying an impressive performance on the course. Fred Wittwer (Nellysford, Va.; Blue Wheel Off Road Team) earned the national title in the Men’s 75-79 race, Whitney Fanning (Waco, Texas; GeriAtrix) was crowned the champion in the Men’s 80-84 category, and Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas; GeriAtrix) won the Men’s 90-94, adding another Stars and Stripes jersey to his growing collection.

Five separate categories started in the Masters Women 55+ wave. Colette Sexton (Lambertville, N.J.; PROthirteen Cycling Coaching) set the pace early and eventually won by 28 seconds over Julie Robertson Zivin (Seattle, Wash.; PNW Colavita Factor). Heidi Curtes (Hubertus, Wis.; Trek Midwest Team) finished on the lead lap to take third.
Elizabeth Sheldon (Washington, D.C.; CXD Trek Bikes) won the 60-64 race after completing five laps. Deirdre Garvey (Boulder, Colo.; Old School Industries) finished not far off to take the 65-69 National Title. Kim Bear (Santa Fe, N.M.; Spokettes) took the win in the Women’s 70-74.
Our oldest racer in the women’s category was Martha Iverson (Durango, Colo.; DNA Cycling Masters), riding to the win in the 75-79 category.
