Twelve Riders Advance After Opening Rounds at the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships

The 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships got underway Saturday morning in Brisbane, with 14 Team USA athletes taking to the track for the opening rounds of elite competition. Twelve riders advanced through to tomorrow’s racing, highlighted by several heat wins and strong performances across every category.

Most of Team USA secured their spots in the next round through the opening motos, while a handful of riders battled through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). The Elite Men contested their 1/8^th finals, while the Juniors completed their quarterfinals today.

Derin Merten (Tempe, Ariz.; Race Inc.) and Preslie Gould (Henderson, Nev.; Factory SSquared/Answer) finished first and second, respectively, in their opening heat, while Addison Thompson (Belgrade, Mont.; BMX Sharks) placed third in hers. All three riders advanced directly to the quarterfinals. 

Later in the day, Merten and Gould lined up in the same quarterfinal heat, pushing hard out of the gate to both land in qualifying positions. Thompson had a hard crashed over the first jump in her heat and was unable to continue. She walked off the track, bringing her World Championships to an unfortunate end.

Tommy Bruney (Pittsburgh, Pa.; Factory Full Tilt/RIFT) won his opening heat to move on. Evan Esposito (Palm Springs, Fla.; Albe's Bike Shop) finished second in his heat to qualify automatically, while Cutter Godaire (Mesa, Ariz.; BMX Sharks) took a hard crash and was forced into the LCQ. Godaire responded by winning his LCQ heat to secure his place in the next round.

In the quarterfinals, Bruney led to the first turn and held it from there to win another heat in the opening day of racing. Esposito had a great ride against a gate full of Australians, managing to ride solidly into second place in qualifying position.Godaire was ecstatic on his ride, also finishing second in his heat, advancing to the semifinals.

Alexis Alden (Peachtree City, Ga.; Albe's Bike Shop) claimed the win in her opening heat, advancing comfortably to the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Sean Day (Tacoma, Wash.; Cycle Therapy Racing) and Cutter Williams (Potomac Falls, Va.; Tangent/RIFT/Rockstar Racing Team) lined up together in a stacked opening heat but narrowly missed automatic qualification, sending both riders to the LCQ. Each bounced back with second-place finishes in their respective LCQ races to advance.

Payton Ridenour (Pottstown, Pa.; Chase Bicycles) finished fourth in a heat dominated by the home Australians, who claimed three of the top four spots. Daleny Vaughn (Tucson, Ariz.; Biolab Sciences/DK Bicycles) rode to a strong second-place finish in her heat, earning automatic qualification to the next round.

Cameron Wood (Bozeman, Mont.; Mongoose/USA BMX Foundation) opened his World Championships with a heat victory to advance. Kamren Larsen (Bakersfield, Calif.; Factory SSquared/Answer) and Drew Polk (Avon, Ind.; Factory Syndyt/LSG) were both sent to the LCQ after their opening races. Larsen successfully raced his way into the next round, while Polk'sWorld Championship campaign came to an end in the LCQ. In the 1/8^th Finals, Wood and Larsen held strong riding with ease into qualifying positions in their heats taking second and third. 

Tomorrow, a new UCI BMX Racing World Champion will be crowed in Brisbane starting with the U23 and Elite quarterfinals, into the semi-finals for all categories, concluding with the main event. Racing will be live on FloBikes.
