USA Cycling announced today the athletes representing the United States at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia, on September 18-25, 2022.
The year has been full of stand-out performances for the professional American road racing peloton, with some of the best performances in the Tour de France and breakthrough performances all around from the women’s team.
The team includes Tour de France headliner Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif.; EF Education-EasyPost). On the women’s side, Giro d’Italia Donne Queen of the Mountains winner Kristen Faulkner (Homer, Alaska; Team BikeExchange-Jayco) will be considered a race favorite. In addition, top talent from EF-TIBCO-SVB will be in attendance, including top Tour de France Femme finisher Veronica Ewers (Moscow, Idaho), and Road Race National Champion Emma Langley (Richmond, Va.).
Michael Sayers, USA Cycling’s Director of Road, said, “The results we’ve seen from the Americans this year have been incredible. The team is looking strong and will fare well on this dynamic course. The first selection will come only 40km into the race with a significant climb, then the riders will head into a very technical city circuit similar to 2021, putting pressure on the field from start to finish. The front group at the finish will be made up of well-rounded riders, and we have quite a few of those.”
Headlining the Time Trial team will be Tour of Denmark TT stage winner, 20-year-old, Magnus Sheffield (Pittsford, N.Y.; Ineos Grenadiers), along with National Champions Lawson Craddock (Houston; Team BikeExchange-Jayco) and Leah Thomas (Santa Clara, Calif.; Trek-Segafredo). Faulkner will also be one to watch.
